As a male nurse in an ICU/CCU here in Southern California, I was just wondering what your thoughts are regarding male nurses in your respective units?

Also a non-issue to me work-wise but there is a more balanced energy with both sexes working together.

I like having male nurses around.
I just want to get the job done and have everyone who works together...work together.
The male nurses I work with regularly just seem to have more fun at work. I like that. I agree with posters who say they are more laid back, less catty.
That said, sometimes older confused people just respond better to male voices, and the added benefit of men for security in an ED can't be overlooked.

... I don't care which set of genitals you sport as long as you're competent and willing to do your share...
Think most guys would say the same.

Right on elkpark. How ever we could use a few more to work in the male max jails in NY.
Tell me about working in a jail. What do you mostly see, "the big one" pay, things like that.

Male nurses always seemed to stabilize the varied personalities quirks on our majority female nursing units. Must be a very primative, subconscious thing - because it was very noticable, predicable and noticably absent when the male nurse was not on shift.

I find no difference. I have worked with some catty men and some great men. As long as you're one of the good ones, you'd get no problems from me:)

I love working with male nurses because the mood is so different when they are working. No gossiping and plenty of laughter. I am a new nurse and felt like I got the most support from the males. I overheard many female nurses talking about the other new nurses. Of course, they would say "but we never talk about you. We love you." Yeah, right. The guys just walk away when the women get catty.

IMO there aren't enough men in nursing. I hope the current trend of more men entering the profession continues because the men I work with demand better working conditions and refuse to take some of the abuse many female nurses put up with. Too many women together isn't conducive (sp?) to a peaceful working environment. Too many women thrive on gossip and cattiness. Just my personal opinion.

Competent people that know what they're doing and do it. That's what matters to me.
