California's 2009 New Grad RN Program- Who's hiring right now? - page 9

Greetings. This is my story- I graduated from Nursing School in May 2008 (ADN) and passed my boards in October 2008. I live north of San Fran and have yet to find a New Grad Program. I've been... Read More

From everyone I've been talking to, applying to new grad positions or any positions online is futile. Getting your resume past HR and into the dept manager's hands is difficult.

I've been told to create a Hiring Portfolio and physically walk into the depts I want to work at, at the places I want to work, talk to the Dept managers and physically hand them the hiring portfolio. It shows you got guts, determination, and the willingness to do whatever it takes to obtain the job.

Oh, and talk to the managers where you did your preceptorship, even if you didn't like the place, it's still experience. After 1-2 years, you can then go to places you want.

Fountain Valley Hospital is interviewing for their Versant Residency Program. There's not much in Orange County.

I really want to be a Peds nurse, but getting into a peds program is near impossible. Interviewed at CHOC in May for 1 of 2 positions in the CVICU, they interviewed over 100 people for the positions.

hey! i still need to meet the posting requirement to reply to pm, i think.. yikes. btw, 1700? no kidding! that sounds scary. i wonder if they are interviewing everyone though? i got there about 30 minutes early and got interviewed right away before i had the chance to munch on my quiche

i also do not have my license yet... i hope that won't hurt my chances much. were you told or able to ask when you will find out?

i don't have my license yet either. i think as long as you have it before the start date, you're good.
i got there early too and was seen right away. i overheard the front desk people counting up how many people were no-shows. i think there were a lot!

I went to Cedars for the open house last week. They told me that they would hire 100 people, but they have been hosting open houses all year, so I suspect that some of those spots may already be taken. The managers I interviewed with said that they will get back to us in a week, and if you don't hear anything, you should call HR to ask. Hope that helps! 1700, really! Not surprised at all, but geez! When I signed in at the open house, it didn't look like they were interviewing more than 20 people each half hour, so that 1700 was probably cut down to about 500-600. The odds there sound a lot better

i actually try to not get caught up in the numbers of it all. i tried to do my best today, and don't feel that great about it (my stupid nerves got the best of me! aaargh)
how do you guys feel you did? do you feel like you were able to make yourself stand out above the rest? if so, how? my interviewer was daydreaming practically the whole time, i could tell she was bored out of her mind doing all of these interviews, and it got me wondering if my interview answers or packet would be remarkable enough to stand out. who knows? i know they ask us the same questions and score our answers, tally them up at the end, and go from there. i just don't feel i did that well today, but i'm okay with that.

I'm not really sure how to assess my performance... But, I understand by what you meant. Well, let's just say that I thought it would have been more formal? Overall, my interviewer made me feel comfortable although I could feel my upper lip starting to twitch near the end of the interview. haha.

I felt really comfortable. I had two managers interview me at the same time, so it felt more like a conversation than a Q & A. I felt a bit though like I didn't have enough time to answer the questions; if I paused at all, they would kind of just cut me off and ask the next question. I did see the first page of the score sheet of the person ahead of me (I'm not a snoop, but it was just laying there on the table in front of me), and she got mostly 5's. So, either she was amazing, or they weren't that harsh with the scoring.

    Hey!
I started a new thread for people who interviewed at Cedars to continue the conversation... "Cedars-Sinai New Grad Summer 09".

All those 5s sound good! The person who interviewed me did not fill out the #s until I left the table, so I couldn't peek.. ack!

    Hi everyone,

I just graduated on May 15, 2009 and awaiting my interim license to be able to work in California. I am nervous and feel worse as I continue to read all your comments! Is it getting any better yet? I should be testing soon early in July. Is there anyone out there that would be willing to tell me who is hiring for this coming month (s)? I've applied to so many hospitals it's not funny anymore. I haven't received one call which I attribute at not having an interim license. Im worried I'm not going to get my IP on time for a new grad. program.

Take care and I hope to get a job opportunity soon.
