California and licensure for both PN and RN

we are seeing more and more posts regarding california and getting results.

for pn it takes on average 4 weeks to get your results, until you get your results via snail mail and pay for your license you will not see your name on the website and will not have a license issued. sometimes it may take longer to get your results if there has been a large influx of applications and test takers. if you find you have to contact them because you haven't heard anything they will usually indicate on what date they are processing.

for rn you will only have a license issued if you have a ssn and have given it to the brn. if you have no ssn then you will not see your name on the brn website. if you inform them you have a ssn after your application is sent in or after you have taken the nclex then give them a few days to up date their files on you. it takes approx 3-10 days to get your results online (as long as you meet requirements and have a completed file) although can take longer. do not ring them until at least 2 weeks has gone passed as the more people ring means a delay on updating yours/others file. majority of times you do not hear anything is due to a incomplete file as california allows you to sit nclex in most cases with a incomplete file, they will not release your results until it is complete. we have had members contact brn to find that there is a problems with their fingerprints or their transcripts haven't arrived so can easily be something simple enough to sort out.

if you are a foreign trained nurse and applied to california and have no ssn then you will not see your name on the website and if you do not provide a ssn within the 3 years then your file is destroyed which does include your nclex results. if you are caught up in retrogression and your 3 years are nearly up then we suggest you apply to another state for licensure by exam and arrange with ca to forward your nclex results. you will still have to meet the bon requirements for foreign trained nurse so do not leave this to the last minute.

But the passing letter is only valid for three years and you are looking at more than five for a chance at a visa for the US. So very bad idea since you will have to go thru another state to keep your NCLEX score current or it will be destroyed with your file in three years.

ms suzzane, as of the statement above, does this mean if someone from another country isnt able to get a visa here in US in 3 years, they're nclex passing score will expire?? and they have to take the nclex again ???

The NCLEX score doesn't expire but Ca will destroy your file with your results if they do not get a SSN within 3 years. With retrogression at the moment you are looking at over 3 years. I would suggest checking out the International forum and use the search facility as Ca and SSN has been written about numerous times

Have updated initial 1st post for foreign nurses outside of the US who do not have a SSN

Good day, Ms Suzanne. I'm a foreign-trained nurse in the Philippines. I recently passed my Ca nclex exam. With the ongoing retrogression here, I' worried because Cali has only 3 yrs. validity unless I provide them an SSN. I'm planning to file endorsement by licensure to Illinois. If ever, is it possible to have a dual licensure from 2 different state. Can I still keep my licensure from Cali and apply by endorsement to Ilinois?

Thanks for your time and attention.

You haven't got a license from Ca as they will not issue one without a SSN but in the US as long as you meet state requirements you can have as many licenses as you want. Ca will probably destroy your file after 3 years but should be able to reapply once you know you have a visa for the US. A lot will depend on what your PD is

I would just like to carify if the validity expires w/in 3 years, does that mean I have to sit for another nclex exam again? oh no!! thanks.

NCLEX is usually for life but it is your application/file that has a 3 year validity and if you do not provide a SSN within 3 years (which with retrogression is likely) your file is destroyed which means your NCLEX results are destroyed. If this happens then yes you will have to resit NCLEX again. Only way to save them is to apply for licensure in another state and move your results across. I would suggest you wait until 6-12 months left and then do it as states have different dates when licenses have to be renewed and you may apply to one state and have to renew license within a few months (seen this happen to a few members)

hi..i am newly licensed RN in the philippines and i intend to apply for nclex in california..my question is...would it benefit me if i use my relative's address in california as my return address for my application? or maybe have my relative file my applications? i am trying to find a way to have my applications filed correctly and not mishandled. i am hoping that having a US return address might have a quicker response to my application. and i'll just have my relative follow things up to me.

Ca will not issue you a license without a SSN. Please take the time to read the International forum found under the region tab above. We do not recommend Ca for initial licensure as they will destroy your file if you do not provide a SSN within 3 years and with retrogression you are looking at the moment at a few more years than that. Also having a US address will not make any difference in your application process and speed things up.

Simple response from me as well. Stay away from CA for licensure if you do not already possess a SSN# or will be getting one shortly. You are not going to get a license number issued to you and you have only three years to present one to the BRN or your file is destroyed. When files are destroyed, so are your results.

When you are going to be waiting probably more than 7 years for a visa for the US, and the file is destroyed in just three years; what are you going to do? Add into it the fact that CA now has the third highest rate of unemployment in the US and that means that it is going to be very hard to even get hired.

Whether or not one uses a CA address makes no difference, it does not speed things up in terms of processing or anything else. Only the mail delivery time is affected, and then there is really no exchange of things. You are also going to be waiting a month for your results.

I suggest that you spend sometime on the International Forum about specifics that you truly need to be aware of before you do a thing.

If you have a SSN and see your name on their website then the result in my opinion is pass. You shouldn't see your name if you failed
