Calhoun CC Fall 2014

Published

Anyone applying for Calhoun's nursing program this fall? I am and I am really anxious and excited!!!

When I went to the information session last year they said that most new grads that are actively looking for work find employment within a year of graduation. I can't remember what the exact number was that was quoted. I would like to think that we will be able to find jobs after graduation but I know it won't be a dream job. I plan on starting the job search before graduation and trying to build a network of contacts during clinicals.

This wait is going to be unnerving! I submitted my application on Tuesday after I took my TEAS. I made 78.7%. I hope that'll be good enough. :( My total score is 131.7. *sigh* I applied for Ft days RN as my 1st choice with LPN as my 2nd choice.

That's a good TEAS score! I think you should be good for the daytime program. Good luck! :)

Thank you, alblove! Good luck to you, too! :D

Hello!

I'm applying to the part time evening program. I finally got my last unofficial transcript in, so I'll officially start my wait in a couple of days after I drop off my checklist. Good luck to everyone here!

Good Luck to you too! Maybe we will both get in! You're the first person I have seen so far besides myself doing the part time evening program.

I will be submitting my application after this semester is over the middle of May to have all of my pre-reqs completed for the most points. I'm getting very excited.

Good luck to all of you. FWIW, my TEAS score was 76 and I got in. IIRC, the TEAS was very heavy with Science. It wasn't easy. Remember too, that if you're already a Calhoun student (even having taken only one class there) or if you have the general classes out of the way, you get extra points for that too.

I've almost completed one semester and have found that they are really nice at Calhoun. I think they have a good nursing program there and from all I read, nursing jobs will be in demand for years to come. I've never been without a job in nursing, except when I chose to be a stay-at-home mom.

I had better go study now. : ) Good luck to all of you!

One thing I bought that I don't think I need is the blood pressure cuff. They'll want you to have a dual head stethoscope. Right now, the uniforms are Landau (Galaxy Blue) and there are two styles to choose from. The patches are like $8-9.

Hi Groovetta,

Can I ask you a couple of questions? Do they require a particular style lab coat? Also do they change books each semester? There are people selling their textbooks on Craigslist and thought I might be able to save some funds first semester by buying some of theirs. Thanks much.

There were two options on lab coats. I know one was Landau 3155 and there was a shorter one to choose from, but I don't have that list with me right now. Currently, the fundamentals book we're using is Fundamentals of Nursing (Potter & Perry) 8th edition. ISBN 0323079334. You might check the publishers website to see if a newer version is coming out.

I checked the publisher's website and I found no indication that they'll be bringing out a new edition of the Fundamentals book groovetta mentioned. :) I'll likely buy my book secondhand as well.

Thank you so much for taking time to post what you know here for us pre-program students! It's highly appreciated!

If I may ask one question, is there anything you think came in handy that wasn't required or was only recommended?

They give you a book list at orientation. If I wanted to start out buying, I'd get the Fundamentals book first. The bookstore offers a "bundle,", but I chose to buy mine from the internet. I'd wait before I bought the "only recommended" books. I'd get the required ones first. The Davis Drug Guide and Calculate with Confidence are needed as well.

Oh, BTW, I found my TEAS score sheet and I made a 74% on the adjusted individual score rather than 76% like I had posted before.
