Calhoun CC Fall 2014
Have a great first day of classes, and good luck!

I think it's just the Calhoun ID. I need to find a holder for mine, too. I just got my ID the other day. You need a copy of your schedule for that too, so print your schedule, get an ID, and head over to the bookstore.

alblove, I hope the bookstore isn't a complete zoo when you're there! It's the first day of class/first day of financial aid waivers, so it will probably be busy for a while. All the nursing books were along the back wall, and there were plenty of them the other day when I went to get my handbook. Good luck and see you Tuesday!

I'm in PTE, so maybe the messages are different. This is what I got (deleted the class name/time/what we need for first day of class stuff): "The reading assignment for the first week of class: Fundamentals of Nursing, Potter & Perry, 8th ed. 2013, Chapters 9, 24, 26. If you, by chance, have Health Assessment for Nursing Practice, Wilson & Giddens, read Chapters 1-5, it covers the same information. Thanks."

The e-mail I have says that the chapters in the Potter & Perry book cover the same information that's in the first few chapters of the other book. I guess they included that info for people who already had the Health Assessment book for some reason.

I got my flu shot at Walgreens Tuesday morning. It's this year's vaccine. Doctors should start getting them in soon; the pediatrics office my kids go to is starting their flu shot clinics in a couple of weeks. I'm planning on wearing my uniform since I have everything.

One of the advisors in our room was talking about that stuff, but it wasn't for my group and I didn't hear a lot of what she was saying. I know she said earrings had to be studs, hair had to be tied back so it doesn't fall in your face.

I'm not doing the ebooks. They're neat and the stuff you can do with them sounds nice, but I don't need them really. I've done much better price wise buying used and buying from Amazon and directly from Elsevier. I meant to ask, but forgot in all the info floating around, if they using the Med Surg book in Fundamentals or if it is just a perk in the bundle. I know we'll need it later in the program, just trying to plan for purchasing it earlier if needed. I got a dual head stethoscope from MDF instruments. I wanted a good yet affordable one. Good enough to be able to discern different sounds, affordable enough that it would be easy to replace if it wandered away. Several reviewers on Amazon said it is comparable to Littmann, not sure about that but it works well.

Fundamentals book is almost as big as the pharmacology book. It seems like a bunch of info, but it can be learned. All the nurses out there did and we will too.

I got the pharmacology book and a couple others from the person who just graduated. All in like new condition, including the code. Y'all, that book is thick and heavy. She gave me the planner she bought when she started, she never used it. She said some of the info in the front was useful, but most of it was in other books. She also said she never used the Taber's. She showed it to me...it was mint. One thing y'all might want to buy new is the Davis's Drug Guide. It comes with a code for a year subscription to the online drug guide. It can be accessed by anything with a web browser, might be useful to have so you don't have to carry the book around with you (it's not as big as the pharm book, but it's not small either). She also said that they will "scare the crap" out of us at Orientation. She didn't go into specifics, but apparently they make it sound awful.

Hi Mel234! There are options for buying the print version through the bookstore, too. If you hit the + on the right side of the screen you should see options for buying new, used, renting, and digital. Lots of options. I'm buying print books, unless there's one I feel is better to buy digital (like NCLEX guides). I'm used to studying surrounded by open books, notes everywhere, and a box of highlighters so that's what I plan on doing with this. I got a pair of Klogs. They're similar to the Danskos everyone talks about, but I found them on sale a little while ago so that's what I got. With the shoes, they have to be all white. I was talking to someone who just graduated this past May yesterday, and she said that they are very picky about the all white shoes. No logos (on the bottom is ok), no silver accents, etc. I highly suggest getting leather shoes (this may be required too), for extra protection from drops and for easy cleaning.

To all the parents, yes YOU can do it!
Thank you for posting this and congratulations on making it to the end!

The publisher website (Elsevier) has the Fundamentals book for $104.80 + free shipping. There is tax, though, but not 10%.

I honestly have no idea where any of the authors are from, since Reddit is (mostly) anonymous.

I think I'm getting my books from Amazon. :) Someone linked this on the Student Nurse subreddit, and it looks like it could be helpful. It's a Nursing School Survival Guide written by several of the members who have graduated. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxtasJGbe67UcXIwVWQ3ajRqb3M/edit?usp=sharing
