is a BSN going to soon be required?

I have heard various people talking about BSN vs. ADN, saying that soon most hospitals and jobs will require you to have a BSN. Does anyone know of any validity to this?? What will happen with all the ADN's, seems there's a lot. Just curious. I plan on going back for my BSN, but maybe I should get on it sooner than later!

ADN + BSN = Same NCLEX = RN...

That's not really the point, though. In some regions supply v. demand of RNs is making educational level an issue of desirability to employers.

*** This is absolutly false. There may well be hospitals out there with such a requirement, but the4re is nothing about Magnet that requires that.

BTW the Magnet hospital where I work does not hire new grad BSNs into it's 7 month Critical Care Nurse Residency program for the SICU. They only hire ADNs.

BSN = BSN

ADN = ADN

ADN + degree in anything else = ADN

A nurse with an ADN and any other degree is just an ADN. Other degrees don't count in nursing.

I'm actually in the process of applying to a RN to MSN program at the moment. From what I have been reading, seeing, and hearing from nurse recruiters most hospitals are making it mandatory. Here in NY many hospitals are seeking Magnet status so they have adapted the practice of only hiring BSNs.

Thing is Magnet hospitals are acquiring a well deserved reputation for not being the best places to work, while at the same time some of them are requiring higher degrees for their nurses. These two thing are going to collide.

And inversely, as the baby boomers retire (including nurses) and health care changes take affect, and the population increases in general, I believe we will see hospitals hiring whatever nurses they can find. They can afford to be picky right now, but in 10 years, the NURSES will be picky, not the hospitals.

I wonder about this d/t restructuring of health care. I think there is not going to be the need for the number of nurses that there has been traditionally. I have patients administering their own chemo at home now for crying out loud. I do think there is going to be a need for higher calibre of nurses, and for this reason, I see advanced education becoming the expectation.

*** You make a good point and you may well be right. However a BSN is not advanced education.

I have heard that MAGNET hospitals require BSNs for specialty areas. One hospital that is near me requires nurses with an ADN to sign a contract that they will obtain their BSN within ten years or they will be terminated at the end of the ten year period.

I used to wonder about that too - I have a bachelor's in mechanical engineering. However, I now strongly suspect my experience in internships, preceptorships, LTC, and Home Care will strongly outweigh any consideration to my engineering career.

Not anytime soon. The talk about making the BSN the point of entry level professional nursing started in the 1950s. As you can see, the idea is not yet firmly in place or practice. Most likely will not happen in our lifetime.

*** There is a two year contract required to get accepted into the nurse residency program. That's two years after the 7 month residency so a total of two years and 7 months are required. Too many of the BSNs where going off to CRNA school before their contract was up vs 100% of ADNs who have completed the residency have finished their contracts. In my residency class there where 9 new grads. 7 BSNs and two ADNs. Of the 7 BSNs 6 did not finish their contract and went to CRNA school. Other classes have had similar results.

It doesn't say anyplace that new grad BSNs are not hired into the residency for the SICU, and they are hired into it for other units, like ER and PACU, but not for the SICU.
