This thread was created for those attending Broward College North Campus in January 2011! We got accepted....let's do this:hpygrp:!!

have any of you guys bought books from previous students on campus?? I have seen some for sale signs up on the post board things they have around campus

sunray: do you have any of your books from the beginning? They have a huge list for the first term but some people say they didn't even use half of the books. Thanks for the input i'm about to apply either Jan if I get the HESI done or by march.

i basically got rid of whatever books i didn't need anymore after i was done with them and i have books that i still need. this is the list. i will add what i used/didn't use, what you need to keep and when you need these:

ana (nur1020) code of ethics for nurses with interpretations did not need/use (may need later in last semester for trends, but not now

castillo (nur1020) strategies, techniques, and approaches to thinking: case studies in clinical 4th ed this was not on my book list when i started, however, someone told me they use this now in clinicals during post-conference

deglin (nur1020) davis drug guide for nurses, 12th ed you will not need this until nursing process 2, and will keep for the rest of the program

jarvis (nur1020) pocket companion for physical examination/health assessment, 5th ed you will use this in np 1 and it's good to have for the rest of the program

lewis et. al. (nur1210) medical/surgical nursing 7th ed you will need this but not until gigu. you will also use it again later for 2 more classes: ortho/neuro and cardio

lewis et. al. (nur1210) study guide to accompany medical/surgical nursing, 7th ed. this may be good to have with the above textbook, but i didn't buy it or use it. but it has questions in it to practice if you want to have

lewis et al. (nur1210) clinical companion to medical/surgical nursing, 7th ed. or pda version also might be good to have with above text but i didn't buy

lippincott (nur1210) fluid & electrolytes made incredibly easy! 4th ed you will not need this until np2, so you can wait to buy then

newfield(nur1020) cox clinical applications of nursing diagnosis & intervention, 5th ed. you will need this all throughout the program for care plans

perry and potter (nur1020) fundamentals of nursing 7th ed. w/ study guide and clinical companion this is for np 1 and 2. i sold mine after np2 but some people kept theirs

hesi (nur1020) evolve practice test 2e this also was not part of my book list, so i'm not sure what this is used for or if it is really needed

hesi (nur1020) evolve case studies complete rn - 2 year version this also was not part of my book list, so i'm not sure what this is used for or if it is really needed

perry and potter (nur1020) clinical nursing skills & techniques, 7th ed this is heavily used during np1 and 2, and it will be used in other classes throughout the program

pickar (mtb 1370) dosage calculations: a ratio and proportion approach, 3rd ed i did not buy this. honestly, everything you need to know will be explained in class. we didn't have the online option, so i'm not sure how the math is set up in that regards, but with np lecture, clinical assignments, and pharm, there was just no time to read the math book.

taber (nur1020) taber's cyclopedia medical dictionary 21st ed or pda version. good to have to look up unfamiliar words, but not a necessity. i bought it but i don't think i've used it a whole lot and if you're by a computer, you can just google things

van leeuwen (nur1020) davis's comprehensive handbook of laboratory & diagnostic tests with nursing

implications, 2nd ed. did not buy/need. in np2 she'll say look up these labs etc etc, but you really don't need to. some people like this as a reference, so its a person preference i guess. i've done fine without it.

recommended:

davis medical surgical notes i didn't use, but if you want it, you won't need this until gigu

glendon & urich unfolding case studies i did not use

myer rn notes 2nd ed i didn't use, but some people liked having theirs

nugent et. al fundamental success i used this and thought it was helpful at practicing taking nclex style test questions. also gave rationales as to why things were correct or incorrect.

nugent et. al. test success: test taking techniques for beginning nursing students 4th ed. i used this and it helped explain how to take the exams, and was good practice. also gave rationales as to why things were correct or incorrect.

shuster concept mapping i didn't use this. i can't remember if this is new or not.

wilson & shields pearson intravenous drug guide 2009-2010 this is new, so i'm not sure on this.

also, those with financial aid: you do not need to buy all of your books at the beginning of the semester for those classes you are taking during the second half of the semester (session 4 classes). before each "session" there will be a period where you can use your financial aid for that session. for session 4 you will just need to bring in a copy of your schedule (and if you forget, just tell them you need to pull it up on their computer and then they will look at your schedule online once its up). session 2 does not need this as its at the beginning of the semester with the regular financial aid schedule, so they do not need to verify anything.

you will be told by the professor to purchase the lab kit for np2 at the beginning because you have financial aid. this is not so. you can wait until np1 is over right before np2 starts and purchase it then with your aid money. once you buy it, you cannot return it no matter what- the bookstore will tell you so, however, the professor will tell you that you might be able to. so since sales are final per the book store, i would wait until after you pass np 1 and then purchase.

Happy New Year to all my fellow nurses to be :)

So did everyone receive the email from the professor????

I did!...I am heading there ready to take notes on Friday :)

i got it too. i stopped by the nursing office at bc north and verified that the first day is friday. then i went to the bookstore and it was jammed with people including several of our classmates. i got the evolve practice and the online case studies which are packaged as one shrink-wrapped item. when i saw $128 on the register i thought there had to be a mistake but no, it's true. and when i got home and tried to find it on ebay or an online bookstore, i found similar things but nothing with the same isbn #. the package is also marked custom 2010 and the one's online were 2007. i'll ask prof. brickmann about it friday before i open the shrinkwrap.

Same here. Had to bite the bullet and buy the Hesi because couldn't find it anywhere on the 'net. I'm not opening it until it's confirmed that we need it.

Hey so I've heard that once we finish process 1 and 2 we're kinda considered LPNs.. Does anyone know what we're certified or liscensed in after process 1&2??

:uhoh3:[color=#9acd32] where did you get that idea? i wish but i really don't think that's true. lpns have to study for 12 months and they take boards. what i heard was that after a certain period of time we're nurse's aids and i'm not at all sure if that's true.

Just to make something clear for those taking Math on Fridays at 1:00pm. Our first day is on the 14th right??

I am not taking the friday class, but you can check your schedule for start dates by logging into My BC and then clicking on registration and then chosing My Schedule... to the right of the class there will be a start date.
