New thread started for all those applying for / accepted to / attending Broward College January 2011. Chime in, let us know how you're doing!
Hey guys! I was wondering if you have any information on the Health Career Core Courses. Is this a semester long course or are they individual courses? I am sooo confused! I have all the other pre req's needed to apply. One area says you have to have that prior to turning in an app and the other says once admitted they have to be complete before you start the nursing program. Then everywhere it says the HESI is for the August 2010 class...do we have to take that to or not? Some of the stuff on the website is unclear.
I took my Health Career Course online at Sheridan Technical center and when you finish, the CAE's are included so you don't have to do any extra classes for those (CPR, Domestic Violence, OSHA, HEP AIDS, and so on). I think it cost $265.00.
Hello! I took the HESI today and am picking up my certificate from the HCP course at Sheridan Tech this week. After that it's off to hand in my application! WOOHOO!!!
I do have some questions for the experts: who knows about deferring your seat? Anyone planning to wait to May if accepted? I feel like I remember reading that students who start in September & January get a longer summer break than those who start in May? Are there any other pros/cons for specific start semester? How long do we have to tell them if we want to defer? At the acceptance/pre-orientation meeting? Is that usually one month after deadline, say probably somewhere mid-to-end October?
Also, anyone have an AP class for one of the pre-requisites? I spoke to someone over the phone who said they won't accept my ENC 1145 grade because it's Comp. II and not Comp. I. She said they do accept AP scores but she didn't tell me what the grade would be! Anyone have any insight on that?
If you made it this far, THANK YOU!! And wishing everyone some major good luck for the January start class!!!
Hi! I know that the May term is only at North Campus and there are only 100 seats at that time...I think North is the best campus from what I heard though. I heard it is a little harder to start in May because you basically start in summer and your classes are shorter, but I'm not sure. :) Good luck!

The summer break is technically the same amount of time. You will take the second half of your first summer off, with the exception if you start in May. Since it is your "first" summer, you won't have off at all. You will have the first half of the second summer off instead. This is because the class you will be taking at that time is a class thats only offered as a session 4 class which is the class that is the second half of the semester. (All nursing classes are either session 2, first half of the semester, or session 4). So that's the basic differences with summer break.
If you start in May, you have to take 6 classes (out of 9) before your break. If you start in Jan, you take 3 and then have a break and then have to take the other 6. If you start in August, you take 5 then you finish the other 4 after summer is over. So you can see some of the advantages and disadvantages of the different starting times based on your own personal preference. Aug to me is the most ideal because I finished a little more than half of my program and then had a break, and I will have both summers off, (aside from 6 weeks this summer, but I will be out next summer).
How you defer: Once you are accepted, you will attend an orientation. At the orientation meeting you are to sign a paper accepting your seat, or you can sign it to decline. If I remember correctly, you just sign it as accepting the seat and I think you email TB and tell her you want to defer and tell her when you want to defer to. You can ask at the orientation meeting to be certain things didn't change. They should also bring this up at some point during the orientation anyway.
I just got accepted to the August 2010 class and at the orientation we had in July, when you sign the paper to accept or decline your seat, they asked us to write DEFER at the top of that paper if we are planning to defer and we knew it at the moment. If you didn't decide that day I believe you were able to accept and notify them at a later date.
I just took the HESI today!!!!! And applied!!!!! :):)
My GPA is a 3.86 and my HESI scores are a 93 on reading, 94 on grammar, 92 on vocab, 80 on A&P, and 92 on math. I would suggest to anyone who hasn't yet taken the test to brush up on A&P, or at least the first semester material, because although there are some very easy questions, there are also some that are kind of like...where did THAT come from? Lol. The math isn't hard either, I was freaking out about it, but did fine. You can use a calculator and it's straight from the study guide...lots of ratios, word problems, and military time, actually not too many conversion problems on my test.
Just waiting to hear back, the woman who I gave my application to said we'd all find out some time, around 30 days, after the Sep 15 deadline.
Now to kick back and relax!!!!!! GOOD LUCK, everyone! And congrats to those already accepted!!
PS: I applied to Central- anyone else applying there?
