Brookhaven Nursing applicants - Spring 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

This is a forum for anyone applying to Brookhaven college ADN program for Spring 2018.What tips can you offer? Any challenges? How was the dosage calculation exam? Any tips for the critical thinking exam and the interview? How many points are you applying with?

Good morning everyone! Here's just some stuff I have to share to get the convo going!

  • I know everyone has the info packet handy, ensure your classes are set. Since this is pretty straightforward, I won't go into a whole lot of detail, but feel free to ask and I'll help if possible.

  • Second, by biggest advice, get your vaccines and titers out of the way NOW. Do not wait like I did for this because if something doesn't go as planned, it won't matter what classes or grade you have..'cause you won't be able to apply with a negative titer. Like many others, I was told not to worry about titers as I had the entire HEP-B series as an infant; I waited until 2 weeks before the application was due, and got a negative titer. I could NOT apply until it was positive. As a result, I have to "sit out" the entire fall semester as the hep B series takes six months. But if your titer is not positive, you can start the series now and you SHOULd have the proper antibodies after the first round, if not then, for sure the second. KEEP IN MIND, the hep-b series takes 6 months: 1st dose ASAP, 2nd dose, a month after that, and then the 3rd dose is six months after the second!

  • Below are links to a HESI-A2 study guide and McGraw-Hill practice exams for the HESI-A2. Now, these both very similarly resembled the HESI-A2. For example, my practice HESI scores averaged 90% and I got an 87.2% on the actual HESI. (I may or may not retake it though).

Hi there, I'm a recent grad of the Brookhaven program so I will try to help where I can. My first suggestion is to make sure all your prerequisites are out of the way because once you're in the program you're going to want that to be your primary focus. As far as challenges go, nursing school in general is a challenge but with determination & will power, you can definitely come out on top & successful. The dosage & calculations exam is fairly easy, as long as you do the two practice exams then the actual test should be a piece of cake. I never had to take the critical thinking exam so hopefully someone else who has taken it can help you there. I'll direct some of my friends who are currently in the program to your post and maybe they can help. The interview is intimidating but looking back on it, it really wasn't that bad, my suggestion is once you get your email invite for the interview, schedule a mock interview in the career services department at Brookhaven, the questions asked there are basically the same questions that will be asked in the interview.

I believe that answers most your questions, to my ability. Feel free to ask whatever else comes to mind & good luck!!

@Shufmann17, may I know what support classes you took?

Hello!

I'm currently taking A&P I in summer I and I'll do A&P II in July. So far my GPA is a 3.7 and I've got a 95% in A&P I. I'm trying to get health insurance through the market place before i get the shots i need (and I'm waiting on my doctors office to tell me which vaccines i've already gotten!). I'm a little bit worried about getting a place for the HESI exam. They say to book it early but it doesn't even open until late August! Should I wake up early on the first day and call as soon as the test center opens to ensure my place or is it not such a big deal?

I just purchased the drug calc. text book. I was wondering, are we able to use a calculator on the exams for that? also, can we take the test on any of the class days listed?

Thanks yall!

Regarding vaccines you can go to Dallas County Health & Human Services (off of Skillman I believe) and tell them the vaccines you need for school & it's not more than $10 per vaccine without insurance. For HESI you must register in person, I recommend going the morning of the first day because it does fill up quickly; you go pay at the register in the main lobby first and then go to the testing center to schedule your date and time.

With the drug calc class you can you a 4 function calculator (the standard basic 97 cent calculator). When I took it 2 years ago you could take it on any of the days but remember you get multiple chances to make 90% or higher but as long as you do the practice tests posted, you'll be just fine.

Hope that helps & good luck!!

Is the program at Brookhaven 16 months or 24 months? I've seen both and not sure which one is accurate.

The program at Brookhaven is 16 months long but with the few breaks you get like Christmas & spring break it actually totals to be about 18 months. If you start in in January you graduate in June, if you start in August you graduate December.

Annette, I have completed all of the support courses except for Ethics.

Parker, with regards to your HESI, I wouldn't worry too bad about getting a spot. If you're not able to take it at a DCCCD campus, there are other testing sites, Lone Star College, for example.

After next week, I will have all of my support courses finished with the exception of ETHICS.
