Breastfeed or else

But see, this is my perfect world.. and in it, the gov'ment pays this, not the tax payers ;)

I believe there are other countries that do this- extended maternity leave with pay at no extra cost to taxpayers. They also subsidize daycares so that educated child care providers will get a decent wage for providing care. Who with a college degree in childhood education is willing to work in a day care center in the US with its pitiful wages?? but then again, who can afford to pay more for child care.

But the government IS the taxpayers! The US government does not generate revenue in any way other than collecting it from taxpayers. Other countries (France, for example) that have "government-paid" benefits such as you describe also have tax rates FAR HIGHER than ours. I already lose 33% of my household income to taxes, and am not willing to pay more to subsidize others' maternity leaves, formula costs, day care, etc. I pay for all of that on my own, and expect that most reasonable and responsible parents would do the same.

Alas, there is not perfect world!

How about some positive, truthful ads. (Cute little baby thinking or maybe fetus) Something like...less ear infections, less dr. visits, less risk of breast ca. for my mom. Breastfeeding...think about it... just for the health of it. (No bull riders or dare devils or other ridiculous stuff).

i actually saw this ad for the first time today on the internet (i'm in canada so obviously we dont run these bull riding ads). i was quite shocked. i think the ad totally misses the boat. it's not an effective health promotion advert. if we were to assume that the point of advertising that breast feeding is the best choice, is to promote the health of the infant, than the focus needs to be on health, not risk factors. i agree with you about positive and truthful ads, imenid. something a lot less offensive. maybe something that encourages mothers to think.....or presents information they might not have known before. instead of something in your face, offensive.

Ah you beat me to it. I was going to ask, where do people think "the governement" gets its funds. You and me, baby. And frankly, I get tired of my funds going to bankroll other people's bad or untimely decisions.

If there are people that don't understand the benefits of breastfeeding then focus on educating, not making those that chose to formula feed for valid reasons like they are abusing their child.

Why don't they put their efforts into making breast feeding easier by having more support out there for new moms? How about making public places more breastfeeding friendly? There is all this pressure, but I found that from the general public, it still was an 'uncomfortable ' thing for them in many cases. Very few restaurants , and public places have adequate BF areas, unless you want to go into a bathroom stall with your baby, or you are one of those women that can whip it out anywhere .

I think it's insensitive, and inaccurate to say that formula feeding is that much of a poor substitute or actually harmful to warrant such a campaign.

Educate and let parents make an informed decision for their own child, their own body. It's nobody's business but mine whether I BF or FF my children.:o

Now girls.. this is MY perfect world.. so settle down.. cuz in it, we DONT pay monsterous taxes. There is room in that big ol pot for lower taxes AND support of the people. Not only do we get more paid maternity leave, our health insurance is cheaper and covers more things, social security is strong, there is more money for our schools, our people are taken care of.. and for all of you who do not wish to breast feed, there will be wet nurses to come to your home and feed your babies. Yard cleaners come around and clean the dog poo and rake the leaves. Husbands never leave dirty clothes on the floor. Everyones BMI is 20-23%:D

Okay, you know this is REALLY starting to tick me off. I've already made it plenty clear that I AGREE that brestmilk is better than formula. But to have multiple people supporting that formula is 4th after that? COME ON!!!! That is going a bit too far. The first three options are all breastmilk. You cannot separate them out like that just to make formula look like it's 4th best. Breast milk = #1. Formula = #2. PERIOD. Don't start throwing out info on milk banks and stuff like that. It's ALL breastmilk. By using breastmilk (in various forms) as choices #1, 2, and 3, it's a very sneaky way to make formula look even worse.

Am I the only one who is getting very upset about this little tactic?

It's like it's not enough for the pro-breastfeeding group for us to say that breastmilk is superior to formula.

I don't even breastfeed (or every have) and it annoys me.

The notion that a person has to have experienced the situation to comment on it is absolutely absurd, plus it would limit our abilities to interact with people from different "groups"

It's one thing to comment. It's another to comment like one knows all about it.

:clown: HMMMM trying to remember the last time I saw a breast milk recall.........:lol2:

This was an attempt at humor...........

...But it does beg the question: since so many harmful substances such as pesticides, meds and other drugs pass through into breast milk, might we need to certify on a regular basis that each Mom 's milk is safe?

Something to think about!
