Brandman University ABSN Program

Published

Hi All,

I'm wondering if any one has heard of Brandman University. They have a new ABSN program in San Diego, CA that i'm looking into. My grades are not competitive but i want to get into my career soon.

Has anyone been to this school, and if so, how did you like it? Do you think I'll be able to land a good job as an RN if I were to apply and attend? I'm nervous, since it is a new program! Such as, what if they end up closing and the degree won't be valid ?

Thanks in advance.

I talked to a advisor at National yesterday as well. They did say the biostats at National HAS to be upper division.

@ABSN_SD

I was actually on Nationals nursing workshop zoom meeting yesterday an d they said that Bio. stats HAS to be upper division. And stats is a pre req. to the program as well.

Which they said is a course starting in 300's.

@619nurse

Yes, Biostats is required to be upper division. I personal was required to take a stats course for my first Bachelors degree from a CSU. However, Microbiology, Anatomy, and Physiology are not upper division. I was waitlisted by Brandman, when I asked why I was told the Microbiology, Anatomy, and Physiology I took at CSUSM with straight A's would not count since it was not upper division. Prior to applying I was very clear about where I took my courses.

I agree that this is something different that Brandman is requiring. I do not get why they wouldn't consider them.

Thanks. @619nurse. That does clarify what I was looking for. I did see that somewhere - there's just a lot of digging to find what you need.

@ABSN_SD - you just have to dig meticulously and you will see it's there, it's just no one explains it to you unless it's an issue. 300 classes are "upper division" and so Brandman's are 300 and National's are 200. However, if the course syllabus demonstrates equivalency, they will give credit. That is why I had a problem with my old A & P - I could not produce a course syllabus. It just depends on how they design their program and then it's regulated by the accrediting agencies.

National's program has been around for years, so they've got all their administrative stuff down. But it does appear you cannot beat Brandman's for speed and overall price. Lab fees may be slightly less too, but likely in National's $60K included all books, uniforms etc. National's tuition for just nursing core and required National classes is $45,000 vs Brandman's $37,000. I thought Asuza Pacific was more than that.

Nevertheless, you can't beat Brandman for speed of completion - core classes done in 16 months, beats National's at 22.

At the same time, for me, Yale online PA is calling out to me. With NP school on top of RN school, the financial gap is closing between the two, and there is the NHCS program dangling out there. Because of my background, I could be competitive and done in 28 months. (and they'll accept my A & P). So, I am going to make finishing my prereqs for that and getting my application completed by Sept. 1 my primary focus for the Summer and push my Brandman application to Winter unless I magically get accepted to start May 4 . . .

@619nurse They didn't give you the option of submitting course syllabi to show equivalency?

@619nurse

Every time I tell this to another school they are shocked. Once things started to become very unorganized and they kept adding additional course work they were not upfront about, I started to get a bad feeling about the school. I think being waitlisted was for the best I will not be reapplying or accepting a seat if one comes available. There are plenty of options at the same price or cheaper. I would get whoever told you the tuition would not go up to send that to you in an email for future proof if you plan to attend.

@mdOldie

I haven’t needed to submit a course syllabus yet and my sciences were approved because A&P and micro. I took at National were both approved and it is articulated in thier database.
Also, the core program I was told takes approximately 2 years. Who told you 16 months? Gosh why is there all this inconsistency. I was told by ----------------------------------.

@mdOldie

The speed in which Brandman portrays their program is not accurate. They will require about two semester of pre-reqs before clinicals. As far as price goes the cheapest would be City College's next CSU's. CSUSM enrolls cohorts every semester. I deeply regret not applying to other programs. I wanted to avoid the TEAS test.

@619nurse

I would just start getting everything in writing if you plan to attend.

OK - you might be right . . .I'm going to upload a file ------------------------- sent me when I asked about this stuff that shows course schedule. However, at the time no cohort had started their first clinicals - I was told that the first cohort had to do prereqs and first clinicals were starting in the Summer. If you look at this schedule, you can see that if you've done all your prereqs/GE (like National requires before they enter you into the program) then it appears to take 16 months.

Sorry @619nurse that was @ABSN_SD that might be able to get approval with syllabi. National's A&P is lower division, but their Micro is upper. They state if the course is equivalent, they will grant transfer credit, so the burden of equivalency is on us.

I am with you @ABSN_SD , I expected to get in without TEAS and other prereqs starting this Summer. I am hoping not to wait until fall 2021 to start somewhere, and I don't want to wait forever or have to spend years in school to get it done. Comparing time vs money. But you could still apply at National, right? There is time before August 21 to take TEAS and stats. I might see you in their stats class this Summer. I was on that call too ?

I transferred most of the GEs and have the 2 LBSU courses to take. My total tuition would be about $42,000-$45,000
