Book vs Movie

When you've both read the book and watched the movie, which do you think turned out better? For me, it's almost always the book. There's just something about being able to create your own picture in your head of what the characters look like, what their homes/other settings look like, and everything else. The movies have never lived up to what I expect of the visual side, plus there's always a lot in the book that has to be cut out for timing purposes. That doesn't mean I won't watch after reading, of course.

I agree with you, @Rose_Queen.

Except maybe the book/movie, To Kill a Mockingbird. I think the movie was virtually identical to the book. And, like probably the majority of people, when I saw the movie it did change my pre-conceived idea of how everyone was supposed to look.

I don't think I've seen that many movies of the books I've read, and vice versa. I think Gone With the Wind did a spectacular job, and so did Anne of Green Gables, with Megan Follows.

I thought The English Patient was a terrible book, so I watched the movie out of curiosity to see if there was something I missed. Nope. Complete time-waster of a movie as well.

Pretty much always the book. It's almost impossible to get all the detail in a good book condensed into a 2 hour movie.

The one that disappointed me the most was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. They left almost everything out of the movie except the tournament.

And the Dumbledore part with “Did you put your name in the goblet of Fire”. So totally not in keeping with the book.

I totally agree with you. But then when I do see a really really good movie, I try to find out if it was a book or based from a book and most of the time it is. Like I've read The Girl on the Train and I really loved it, then there was a movie for it so I watched it. It was okay, not as great as the book.

The orig Frank L. Baum book 'Wizard of Oz' has differences from the movie we all so lovingly know so well. Likewise, Scarlett O'Hara had 3 husbands in the book.

I just finished the 1st 'Twilight' novel. (Just wasn't a 'reader' for a very log time.) Others who have read the book said the movie & TV are disappointing.

'The Exorcist' was about the most scarey book I ever read. The full feature movie also scared the wileys out of me. The truncated TV version does NOT do the movie justice!

A lot of times books are better than movies but it is because movies can only do so much.  For example, I like the book series starting with Crazy Rich Asians over the one movie made.  The one movie made was good.  However, the books delve into areas and plot lines that are more complex and detailed.

In addition, I just finished streaming Bridgerton season 1.  I also recently learned that there is a book series.  So, I am going to read the book series since I suspect that although the television series was very good, the books will be better. ?
