Blacklisted by your Nursing School?

I'm in a particular situation and was wondering if anyone had faced anything similar.

I have recently graduated and become licensed and was following up with professors who had agreed to write me letters of recommendation for jobs and getting nowhere. No response to multiple emails and phone calls from five different people in the department. So I decided to stop by there when I came on campus to pick up my diploma to see if I could catch someone in person.

I ran into one of the professors who had not responded to me and she told me to go to her office and that we needed to talk. She told me that the department had found our facebook group, that students had been saying disparaging things about professors and making death threats and "how would it look if I wrote you a glowing recommendation when the head sees all of them?" She said my behavior was unprofessional and implied this was why no one was responding to me. I have become persona non grata.

Except I never wrote anything disparaging or made any threats against anyone. I was completely blindsided by these accusations but I went back to check my activity on this group and found nothing questionable at all. Our department had a lot of problems communicating important information to students so we started this Facebook group to easily keep each other abreast of what was going on and share resources such as helpful videos that further explained course content.

There were a few students who had written less than professional comments and I know two of these students are employed in hospital jobs right now so they probably got letters before their comments were discovered. I wrote nothing unprofessional and I feel like I am being singled out because they can no longer hurt those other students.

I know I can't force anyone to recommend me, but I find it suspicious that professors who already gave their assent that they would are now ignoring me, especially since I was the valedictorian of the class. It feels like I have been put on an informal blacklist without any chance to defend myself.

I feel like without letters of recommendation my job prospects are severely limited and I'm not sure of what to do about this.

I had considered speaking with the head of the department (who I don't really know, but who sees me as a troublemaker because once when I had an issue with a professor who repeatedly misgraded my exams and refused to fix them, I asked Student Services how to handle it which was a huge no-no. Apparently the nursing department does not like anyone going outside the nursing department for help) but I feel like her response will be that she can't make anyone write me a letter. Which is true. If I bring up what that professor told me in confidence, I could be putting her job in jeopardy.

I can't really see a way forward and I really feel like all the time, effort and energy I spent on this program could have been better invested elsewhere.

Does anyone have any advice?

Just look for work and move on. It is possible to get work with out a teacher singing your praises. You might have to work were you dont want to get some experience. There are a lot of new grad nurses who moved on with out their school telling the world how wonderful you are. New grad programs and residencies arent your only option. But if it is the only option you are willing ro look at all the while lamenting how icky the politics of nursing is you are going to have a rough go of it in the real world. Cut your losses critically think and solve the problem of getting a job with out letters.

If a nursing student made death threats to nursing professor on fb that student could be reported to the BON and investigated for moral turpitude.

The OP got off easy. No student has a right to a letter of reference.

One of the posters above me is correct in that you do not need a letter of recommendation to find a job. I didn't have any ... I just used employment references. I don't even think they were called. Not all employers call thoroughly. Don't seek employment where they do require a letter. You just may be limited until a year or 2 after that first not so cushy RN job.

School's over, you graduated and passed your NCLEX. Their refusal to return your calls/emails is their answer to you, so just move on. If they feel harassed, continuing to call and dropping by will just make it worse. Look for work without a letter from an instructor, it's NOT the end of your nursing career! It never even occurred to me all those years ago to ask for a letter from my nursing instructors, and I did just fine.

I'm really disappointed by how horrible people can be in this profession. Watching the cheaters, liars and butt kissers get ahead by massaging egos while true passion and achievement count for nothing has made me really rethink if I belong in nursing.

Am I the only one who sees the irony in this?? What about the behavior of students who are disparaging their instructors online rather than dealing with issues face-to-face? Karma bus has arrived.

It is a fact of life in general, but specifically in our profession. Those who stand by and do nothing when they are aware of ethical, professional or legal violations (such as the Facebook comments) are in collusion. Failure to act is always interpreted as support.

So my story has a happy ending. I graduated and got my RN in New York City. Because of hospital shutdowns, consolidations and the push towards Magnet status, no hospital will look at you without experience. And with an ADN it's even worse. The only jobs available for new ADN graduates are nursing home staffing jobs which require two letters of recommendation, the completion of an IV cert course that you pay out of your own pocket before they will even look at you, and have almost no training. This is why I was so desperate for letters. That's just the job market here right now. I applied to hundreds of positions in the NYC metro area and didn't even get one call back or response. I started to think this whole thing had been a mistake.

But then...I decided to start looking further afield. I applied in Albany and got a response immediately! Two interviews in quick succession and a job offer in a week! I visited the hospital and I fell in love. There was kindness, there was compassion and everyone was so nice. It was the complete opposite of the HHC hospitals where we had had our clinicals. They offer a 6 month preceptorship and it's total care nursing on a post surgical floor so I'm going to learn everything from the ground up in a supportive environment. I am over the moon!

So what I'm saying is, it was where I was at that was the problem. As soon as I looked elsewhere, everything fell into place. Thank goodness I can now forget about my horrible nursing school experience and concentrate on being the best nurse I can be.

Thanks everyone for your comments and support in the meantime :)

Congratulations and best of luck!

And hopefully you will take the valuable lesson you learned to heart and be very very VERY careful about social media in the future, especially when it comes to your workplace. There may be kindness and compassion and niceness there at your new place of employment, but--as you've learned firsthand--with social media around, there is always the potential for you to get into trouble.

And you'd be surprised how fast their kindness, compassion and niceness will go away when you run afoul of the hospital's social media policy. So mind your step :)

Enjoy Albany!

Congrats on the job!!!

I'm curious though, WHY would an ADN RN have to complete an IV course? The ADN grad has far more experience with IV's than a BSN grad, at least in this area
