Biology and Chemistry too much in same semester?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Just wondering if anyone has done both at the same time, and how they did. Thanks. :)

I took General Bio and General Chem last semester and did fine with both. Just don't do what I did and schedule these to classes, along with Anatomy in the same day and end up being in school for 12 HOURS! That was a LONG 15 weeks.

Spread the classes out during the week. There were days when I had 3 exams in one day. This semester, my schedule is MUCH better. PHEW!

My daughter's doing both right now and except for having a nightmare bio teacher, is holding her own.

I think it's always important to ask around and get plenty of instructor recommendations from fellow students. That's one terrific (and smart) way of avoiding impossible situations that might come up too late to be rectified once class is under way!!

Last semester I took general chemistry, as well as microbiology. The advisor at the community college I took the classes at told me not to do such a thing, however I ended up getting an A in both classes. I was surprised at how easy it ended up being. I do agree that you need to do your research on professors you might end up with in both classes...as this makes all the difference. Ratemyprofessor.com is a GREAT site to do that.

As a nursing student who has done this already, I believe I can help. First of all, it depends on which Biology and Chemistry you plan on taking together. I do not know how they do it in other states, but at Nicholls State we have to take A&P I along with its lab in the first semester. I took Chem. 101 with A&P I and A&P I lab in my first semester as a college student along with living in an appartment with 15 hours of school total and working 26 hours a week. I handeled it just fine. Currently I am taking Pathophysiology (an upper level Biology) with Chem. 208 (Biochemistry). I am doing well in both and do not feel overwhelmed, but I only have 12 hours total. It just depends on mostly determination I think and only a little bit depends on how smart you are.

I was originally a pre-med major for my first semester of freshman year (last semester) and I had to take General Chemistry 1 with lab and Molecular/Cellular Biology with lab. Yes, you have to put in the effort, but if you prioritize, then you will be able to do it. (I got A's and B's.) My sophmore year I will be taking Micro + lab and A&P 1 + lab, so I will have to tell you how that goes too. Good luck!

I am taking Two chemistry courses and A and P 2 so 14 hours total of sciences, im holding my own but don't do it unless you have to and you are displined and naturally a good student. Good luck

Yep, more than once.

2nd semester general chem and freshman biology = 2 A's

1st semester organic chem and zoology = 2 A's

2nd semester organic chem and microbiology = 2 A's

1st semester biochem, cell biology, developmental biology = 3 A's

The point is, it is definitely possible to do them simultaneously and to excel. It's not easy but it can be done.

I would point out that nursing school will require multiple difficult classes at the same time so you're going to have to manage.
