Please help your fellow Nurses in Orlando they are desperate. Orlando Health has spit in the face of Nursing. Please help them by signing a petition to stop this huge pay cut at change.org http://www.change.org/petitions/orlando-health-stop-nightshift-differential-cuts-to-nurses

"Orlando Health announced Monday, August 5 that they will be cutting the night and weekend shift differential to thousands of employees, across 8 area hospitals, to go in effect September 8. These cuts are more than 50% of the current rate and will result to each an individual loss upwards of $600/month, $7000-$15,000/year. A majority of the employees affected are Nurses, who are already notoriously underpaid and overworked. Corporate members are denying any request for negotiations, and gave less than 1-month notice for employees to acclimate to this substantial financial blow. The Orlando health corporation decided they want to decrease pay significantly, with no decrease in employee workload."

PLEASE! Your help is desperately needed.

Great Article thanks for posting herring_RN.

Actually, I feel nurses need to ban together, across the country,on several issues. One issue being pay, being short staffed, and being disrespected, ( especially the disrespect from doctors). As nurses, we have earned our degrees, experience, place in medicine, our profession at the congressional level.Hospitals absolutely can not operate without nurses.Physicians Assistants make more money than RN's,Certified Surgical Assistants make more money than RN's in the operating room.Nurses before us fought for the profession, and we need to continue to battle. We work long hours, continue our education and certifications,we advocate for the public/patient,as patient acuity rises, so does our responsibilities, as new standards are implemented by licensing organizations,we are expected to implement these, which means more work for nurses. We are doing the grunt work, while making doctors and CEO's millionaires. Why are hospitals making expansions when they don't have the funds to operate the size of the current facility. Having the funds to operate also means having the funds (before expansion) to pay nurses what they deserve and have earned, having the funds to adequately staff departments with nurses.I would like nurses to ban together and take a stand across the US,I don't want to be told my pay is going to be cut, that my department is short staffed of nurses, talked to like crap by doctors, told to work harder and faster.I say enough of this,it's time to take back our profession. We need to be heard publicly.

My PDN agency is Orlando-based, and mailed every nurse a copy of the Orlando Health pay cut article. I'm not sure if they were doing it to keep us aware of what was going on in the world of nursing, or trying to show us that we really don't have it so bad.

If successfully implemented and without a united response, policies and actions like these will spread rapidly.

Or that they are preparing you for pay cuts as well? Your reply is old enough that if that were the case, maybe you can update the audience?

Lol, there is nothing left to cut from us! My employer offers no benefits (except one vacation day per 400 hours worked, max out at 5 days, pay rate is 14/hr for 8 hours as each "vacation day," more than one call off a month and you automatically lose it). New hires are all paid the same, no differentials, no raises, equal pay regardless of education (LPN to MSN). They did announce they would be paying the fine rather than participate in the ACA. Of course, the company offers insurance to office workers, landscapers, janitors, everyone except nurses, who can only be classified as per diem. Perhaps their rationale is we can't complain about the lack of insurance if Orlando health is cutting back so hard on their benefits.

Hold these insurance companies and hospitals accountable. You know what?, Have hospitals create their own insurance policies. Prepay by the community.
I think that would be an interesting venture....

I worked for a huge global hospital system that did have its own insurance plan, although it was marketed to the general public and other employers as well. They also had a Medicaid and a Medicare product. Almost universally, the anecdotal evidence from everyone who worked for the health system was that our coverage was a lot more expensive out of pocket, for fewer benefits, compared to others outside of the health system who were covered by different versions of the health system's plan. Furthermore, our health care was not any cheaper, and in many cases, more expensive, than other insurer's plan for care at our very own institution. Since they didn't have to worry about marketing the plan to their own employees, they let us pay a higher chunk of the cost. For them, it seems like a pretty good system, right? As an employee, you use their insurance, which funnels you to their providers, their hospitals, their vendors. Anything else, you (the employee) have to pay ridiculous out of network fees. Just keeps their money cycling on and on into their own system. And they are making money hand over fist.

Major Settlement Agreement Reached Between NNOC-FL/NNU and Orlando Health (National Nurses United)

11/5/14

RNs move forward with union drive to win voice in patient care

Orlando Health registered nurses are hailing a major settlement reached with the healthcare system as a critical win for nurses' ability to freely exercise their democratic right to organize for a voice in patient care, the National Nurses Organizing Committee-Florida, (NNOC), announced today...

... The new agreement resolves unfair labor practice charges filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) last October on behalf of the RNs by NNOC-Florida. The NLRB's Tampa Regional Director had ordered a hearing on the violations of federal law by a number of Orlando Health managers earlier this year. This settlement was reached in order to avoid further litigation and Orlando Health does not admit any violations occurred.

"I am thrilled to announce that as a result of this settlement, several cases where disciplines had been unfairly issued to my coworkers have been removed from our records," said Stacey LaRoche, an RN who works at Winnie Palmer. "This recognizes our right to organize and we have won the respect we know we deserve...

... Some highlights of the settlement Orlando Health agreed to:

  • Remove all disciplinary actions taken against RNs for exercising their right to organize,
  • End surveillance of union activities, and threats of reprisals to RNs because of their union activity,
  • Stop the interrogation of nurses about their union activities or sympathies,
  • End the discriminatory enforcement of off-duty access rules against nurses based on their support of NNOC and allow RNs to have access to hospital break rooms while off duty to talk about why they support NNOC...

I do believe there are just too many nurses. Period. This is another reason to make BSN the entry level to practice. The American Association of Respiratory Therapists just announced their plan to implement the the bachelors in respiratory therapy the entry level requirement by 2020. I think the nursing profession is getting left behind. Having the BSN requirement would place more value on each individual nurse.

I feel so bad for you FL nurses. I cant imagine taking such a drastic cut. It really is a slap in the face for administration to be so ready and willing to take advantage of the nurses.
