Beware of Mount Sinai!!

GRRR!! I called Mount Sinai's HR last week Wednesday where they happily informed me of a weekly open house where healthcare professionals could come and fill their applications with an on the spot interview. I was too happy, especially with 2 months of rejection as a new graduate. I drove about an hour for this interview put all my ducks in a row and everything. I walked into a room of 20+ people filling applications and I thought, great! This is really happening. The girl at the desk was very unprofessional. She was having a loud coversation with another rep about her weight and the gym, etc. She was even on her cell phone talking badly about the hospital. Something like "yea, they're always on your back. They did that to such and such but you should be fine" etc. I noticed everyone who got up to turn in their completed application was leaving and the rep was appologizing for the nurse recruiter not being there. So, when I brought up my application I ask if an interview was still garanteed just at a later date to which she told me someone would review my application and call me. I wanted to know if that was a definate, she could not say. So I asked for the name, phone number, email of the recruiter to follow up, she said she she couldn't give the email but wrote down HRs number. So again I asked for a name, which I finally got. When I got home I called HR to leave a message for the nurse recruiter since she didn't show up to conduct the interviews just to be told she was in the HR office in the middle of an interview!!! Once I revealed that I had been to the job fair that day and was told the recruiter would not be making it I started getting those "ums" and "ahhs" and I will transfer you so you can speak with her directly. Of course being in the middle of an interview she did not answer the phone but how unprofessional is that!?! Not only was the replacement representative totally unprofessional but a hospital can not advertise something and conduct themselves that way. It also looks bad if your employee is talking bad about your hospital. To set up a job fair/open house with on spot interviews and not show up is one thing but to be on site holding interviews/reviewing apps in you office is another. The open house was from 9a to 12 noon, it wasn't all day so IMO there is no excuse. But they tried to say "She is reviewing applications in her office and calling people from there, we hired 50 people last week means nothing when you commit to holding on spot interviews at the same time as your reviewing/calling/interviewing in your office. That is not how busines is conducted. Total downgrade to that hospital. That is beyond unprofessional. I may be just being upset and bitter but I drove almost 100 miles round trip to be lied to. I am not happy at all. And if I wouldnt have called to follow up I wouldnt have known. How can someone do that to people much less the HR department. They were fully aware of it and even had an attitude as if I shouldnt have been shocked or concerned. TOTAL MADNESS!! TOTAL DOWNGRADE MT SINAI, TOTAL DOWNGRADE!!

I attended the weekly open house and it was the same thing dozens of applicants being interviewed, I was asked only 2 questions, first if a doctor gives you an order that is not correct do you follow it? Second how would you do a nursing diagnosis? Then I was told I needed a refresher course since I graduated 2007. Refresher!! Mount Sinai is associated with several nursing schools they are in essense a teaching school. Most applicants who I saw with smiles on their face were new grads who did clinicals there.

I feel your pain!!! I went to Mount Sinai's open house twice and the 1st time the recruiter asked the same questions. The 2nd time she did not look enthused that they would be hiring anybody. She looked at my resume and before even asking any questions she said I needed refresher!! Granted I do but my goodness ask me something to find out what else I have to offer! I really hope this market gets better!!!

Well, its Friday. The end of the week and myself nor any of the people I know that have attended have received a phone call. Maybe the HR is really backed up there, but who knows. And it was very big of the HR director to reply. We shall see what comes of this...

Well 2 weeks later...still no call. LoL, the recession allows ppl to do carzy stuff....

I take this thread as a GLARING example of being careful about what you post. In all honesty if I was the recruiter I would NOT hire the OP after reading this thread. Just being honest.

Understandable. Everything I wrote in my account of what happened that day is true. And I would not be hired for telling the truth, calling them out for all to see. Transparency is talked about a lot but hard to back up I find. And that's where someone like me gets in trouble. I'm not afraid to say certain things when some feel it would be better to shut up or whisper...I'm not that person...number one weakness :o. I hope people who read this thread take it as a glaring example as to how this hospital conducts their business. And I've come across quite a few who can relate, so hey. If I do or do not recieve a call, I doubt it would be based on this thread as NightNurse876 is not the name on my application or resume. If a dont recieve a call, and I haven't, nor has anyone else that I personally know who went there that day, the finger in this case doesn't point at me...even though I blew the whistle. But I understand. If someone spoke badly about your business bc of their experience you would not hire them for telling the truth...

No you didn't post your name but you were very specific about the story, the phone call, etc.. it wouldn't be too hard to figure out. Anyway, if being the outspoken whistleblower will be an acceptable substitute for a job then be my guest. I was just offering some advice that will serve you well in your career. There will be many times that you are right but broadcasting it to the world won't help your case. Its called discretion.
