GRRR!! I called Mount Sinai's HR last week Wednesday where they happily informed me of a weekly open house where healthcare professionals could come and fill their applications with an on the spot interview. I was too happy, especially with 2 months of rejection as a new graduate. I drove about an hour for this interview put all my ducks in a row and everything. I walked into a room of 20+ people filling applications and I thought, great! This is really happening. The girl at the desk was very unprofessional. She was having a loud coversation with another rep about her weight and the gym, etc. She was even on her cell phone talking badly about the hospital. Something like "yea, they're always on your back. They did that to such and such but you should be fine" etc. I noticed everyone who got up to turn in their completed application was leaving and the rep was appologizing for the nurse recruiter not being there. So, when I brought up my application I ask if an interview was still garanteed just at a later date to which she told me someone would review my application and call me. I wanted to know if that was a definate, she could not say. So I asked for the name, phone number, email of the recruiter to follow up, she said she she couldn't give the email but wrote down HRs number. So again I asked for a name, which I finally got. When I got home I called HR to leave a message for the nurse recruiter since she didn't show up to conduct the interviews just to be told she was in the HR office in the middle of an interview!!! Once I revealed that I had been to the job fair that day and was told the recruiter would not be making it I started getting those "ums" and "ahhs" and I will transfer you so you can speak with her directly. Of course being in the middle of an interview she did not answer the phone but how unprofessional is that!?! Not only was the replacement representative totally unprofessional but a hospital can not advertise something and conduct themselves that way. It also looks bad if your employee is talking bad about your hospital. To set up a job fair/open house with on spot interviews and not show up is one thing but to be on site holding interviews/reviewing apps in you office is another. The open house was from 9a to 12 noon, it wasn't all day so IMO there is no excuse. But they tried to say "She is reviewing applications in her office and calling people from there, we hired 50 people last week means nothing when you commit to holding on spot interviews at the same time as your reviewing/calling/interviewing in your office. That is not how busines is conducted. Total downgrade to that hospital. That is beyond unprofessional. I may be just being upset and bitter but I drove almost 100 miles round trip to be lied to.
I am not happy at all. And if I wouldnt have called to follow up I wouldnt have known. How can someone do that to people much less the HR department. They were fully aware of it and even had an attitude as if I shouldnt have been shocked or concerned. TOTAL MADNESS!!
TOTAL DOWNGRADE MT SINAI, TOTAL DOWNGRADE!!
No you didn't post your name but you were very specific about the story, the phone call, etc.. it wouldn't be too hard to figure out. Anyway, if being the outspoken whistleblower will be an acceptable substitute for a job then be my guest. I was just offering some advice that will serve you well in your career. There will be many times that you are right but broadcasting it to the world won't help your case. Its called discretion.
So what about the others I know that went that day and were discreet as you put it but haven't recieved a call either? Well, they didn't know about the bag of lies, so... And even if I was specific about my encounter doesnt mean I gave them my information when I called either...but nothing to hide. Telling the truth is telling the truth. If you would not say anything or be discrete as you put it just to get a job, thats your standard. I'm not gonna hide the fact that a facility was wrong just to get a job there, thats not my style, I wouldnt want to work for a place that does/condones that and continues to lie/put up a front. I wouldnt be able to truely represent that place with all of me. My career is not just about a paycheck.
I wouldnt discriminate against someone that did either...If I say a run my stuff one way and do otherwise and someone calls me on it...I would want someone like that on my team bc I know my business who run more efficiently and I wouldnt have to work about a similar problem...or atleast have less worries. Thanks for the advice but I just dont agree with it, simply. Discretion is important in some instances, not all. And I didn't think this was one of them. Call me wrong.
But being myself, I landed a position at a hospital I am more than happy to work for. Yay me! But I guess if something like what happened to me may have happened to you and countless others who couldve been on their last dime...like I was (My gas light was on all the way there and I prayed to make it home) discretion wouldnt mean a thing. But hey, thats just my take on it. And the beauty is...on this site your take has the same standing...
NightNurse, I'm sorry you had a bad experience with Mt. Sinai. I recently graduated with my BSN and am interested in attending their open house. However, when I called the nurse recruiting number posted on the website, the woman who answered the phone had no idea what I was talking about.
I was wondering if anyone has attended an open house at Mt. Sinai in the past week or two? If so, what is the date/time/location? Do you have to register or do I just show up?
Thank you!
I had thought that Mt. Sinai in Miami wasn't considering applications submitted by new grads? I believe that's what was posted on the recruiting section of their website. If I'm wrong, though please correct me. I've had nothing but fantastic experiences with that hospital / team and would love to work there when I complete school, but was discouraged from doing so immediately after graduation because they posted that they currently have no openings for new grads (this is the past few months until the present).
Nowhere announces that they're hiring new grads, but somehow kids in my class are getting jobs! It never hurts to go and see what happens, I say. Well, it does with gas being this expensive, but you know--nothing ventured nothing gained! According to their site the next open house is tomorrow. Go, and see what happens!
did anyone go to the open house beginning of august?very nice lady was doing interviews & talks about rn intern position
has anyone heard back? or know when she'd be calling for 2nd interviews?
i had an open interview with them and it lasted for about an hour and fifteen minutes.. she said that if the ED manager was in (not in those exact words) she would have had me go do a second interview that day.. the only thing that sucked was that i was not licensed in florida yet and i thought i did very well on the interview to land a new grad job there.. still staying positive!
