I'm not sure what you mean by "best". In terms of nicest area, I like the east side (Redmond, Bellevue, Kirkland, etc.). In terms of lowest cost of living, the south end is where you'd want to be (Kent, Tacoma, Renton, Federal Way). I live on the east side. It's more expensive but it's so much nicer. You can't buy a house up here without expecting to pay $300,000. Down in the south end, you can get away with paying $200,000. But I think it's worth it.
When deciding about the "nicest" place to live, be sure to factor in the tremendously exorbitant property taxes that you'll pay, depending on where you live. The Sumner//Bonney Lake area, which 10 years ago was a very pretty place and quiet too, to live, is starting to look like South Hill of Puyallup or the Federal Way area. Way too overgrown with questionnable expansion plans being approved by the city and the county. It's the second-most sought after place to live in Washington now.
Median house prices in Pierce County just announced at $199.900, up about 20K from last year. Our property taxes every year increase. This year they are $8500.00
We love living here, but will be priced out soon. The good news is that new homes even on small pieces of property are starting in the high $300's and going up to $700K or more, so when we are ready to move on (or be forced to) our property will command a good price and we'll have cash in hand to build our next place. It's going to be south and west, where the prices are still low, the population is sporifice and the taxes are a fraction of what they are here.
I am very, very partial to Vancouver, WA.Mild climate, easy commute to everything and no Oregon income tax.
im just up the road from kids r fun and gotta agree, Vancouver is a beautiful fairly inexpensive safe place to live. lots of neighboring small towns too that are close enough to commute but still are very "country" living and Portland is a nice midsize city with all the ammenities. 1.5 hours to Mt. hood, 1.5 hours to seaside (pacific ocean) camping everywhere, same with lakes. Come on out!
