Best shoes for school

Published

I will be beginning nursing school next month. I am curious as to what kind of shoes everyone is purchasing or has purchased for school. We are required to wear all-white shoes and I am having a hard time finding shoes that fit the color bill but are still comfortable. I was going for a tennis shoe but I was interested in knowing if other students are choosing nursing shoes such as nursemates over a tennis shoe.

Thanks for your input.

Thanks so much!! I just really wanted to get an idea of my other options. I had planned on all white gym shoes but I am having no luck in that arena. I will try some of the shoes that I heard here and see which ones are the best fit for me!

Thanks...

If you plan to buy shoes online, I recommend zappos.com. No tax, no shipping & handling charges. And it ships in 3 days or less. I've been ordering shoes from them over the years that I'm now a VIP, so I get my orders in 1 day.

My around $20 K-Swiss white tennis shoes fit the bill for me. Good support, feet never bug me. I throw them away every few months and buy another pair.

i swear by standing comfort....orthodics-80 bucks, but I've worn the same pair for 1 year now and they're still going strong

I also am trying Spring Step. I wanted the "Happy" style, but my size was sold out. I got "Harmony" instead.

I, too, am starting my first semester next month. I currently work as a housekeeper at an area hospital. I am usually scheduled in the ED so you betchya I am walkin' crazy amounts each shift :D

We are also required to wear all white shoes. Why they make students wear predominantly white is beyond me. I know it looks professional and it makes us easily identifiable but we're just going to end up getting poop, urine, vomit, blood, sputum, etc. coming from pretty much every orifice out of our patients. Get the bleach ready! heheh OK, sorry about that tangent...

ANYWAY :p I started out wearing these basic Reebok walking shoes but after a while, they hurt my feet, A LOT  Then I switched to some gently used Adidas Supernova running shoes I had tucked away in my closet. Comfortable but still, my feet burn something HOT after I'm done working. Btw, I have had h/o surgeries on both my ankles and I very much underpronate when I walk (meaning I step off on the outside of my foot).

I wanted to get some non-slip Crocs but one of the hospitals we're doing clinicals at doesn't let you wear shoes with just a strap in the back =( Then, I wanted to get some Dansko's because I thought they were cute and comfy but heard they're not so comfortable afterall.

Finally, I heard a lot of good things about Merrell shoes. I looked for some all white ones and came upon the Encore Breeze Pro's on their website (Women's Merrell Encore Breeze Pro Shoes - Merrell.com) They look extremely comfortable, practical and they're actually decent looking. I don't know if you're like me but I am 1) a person who relies a good deal on user review's (there are a lot of positive reviews from nurses and MDs) and 2) I am hooked on online shopping! Especially it being the holiday season right now, I am trying to avoid those crowds.

What appeals to me about them is they come in all white and they have a non-slip sole. Working as a housekeeper, when I fiber mop the floors, I can't count how many times I've seen nurses almost eat **** slipping irregardless of the fact that I verbally warn them as well visually by putting out the wet floor signs. Soooo I don't want to be that person who falls lol because as klutzy as I am, it'll happen. It's been surprisingly difficult to find a combo of those two.

I am going to order these (they have free shipping right now!) and I'll let you know what I think of them! If they're good, I'm going to order a pair for my housekeeping job too!

I have used Marrell mocs for nursing school and liked them very much. I need good shoes since i have back and knee issues. I've worn Birkenstock for everyday wear, for about 20 years. Love them. I think I'll get a pair of white Alpro c100, by Birkenstock. I love the orthotic foot bed. I also have a pair of Dansko shoes, but don't like them as much as the Merrell brand. I really am a believer in well made shoes if you are on your feet all day.
