Best pre-req's to take over the summer!!

Published

I plan on taking two nursing pre-req's over the summer. What do you think are the best pre-req's to take over an 8-week period? I was also considering taking the courses online if they were available. I'd appreciate your feedback, thank you! :redpinkhe

My English I required full papers with formal citations. I would check the syllabus before classes start to make sure you aren't going to have a nightmare summer.

Summer school sounds so benign but it has completely ruined 2 summers in a row.

I would take english comp 1 and 2 just to get them out of the way. You won't have to worry about writing those papers!:)

English, Psychology, or Sociology, some of the easier classes. I made the mistake of taking A&P II during the summer, in eight weeks, and it was TERRIBLE. Compressing a major science's coursework into eight weeks is a nightmare, and not something I would recommend. However, English, Psychology, and Sociology are all very manageable in eight weeks, and are even easier if you take them online.

I took general chemistry and math (for health sciences) last summer. I did just fine in both classes.

I think taking a science class in the summer is completely doable, if you don't have too many other obligations and can commit to the time in class as well as study time outside of class.

Last summer, I took Chemistry and Biology together. Big mistake. If you can avoid taking two science classes together, I would do it if I were you.

If the school you're taking your prerequisites at and the nursing schools you plan to apply to accept CLEP, I would try to take out a few courses that way. That's how I got Lifespan Growth and Development out of the way one semester. Be aware though that some colleges may not accept it or may rank them differently on your transcript.

Hi,

If i was you, i would take a tolal of 4 classes over the summer. Make sure you leave a slot open for Gen. Bio, because most school won't allow you to take A&P or micro unless you have Gen Bio. out of the way. Trust me that class is cake! Good luck! :) P.S. Make sure you Keep a 4.0 in all sci courses.

I'm taking Arts Appreciation and BCIS first summer semester and Speech the second semester... I think for summer you should maybe stick to the basic "easy" classes so to speak.

I say it depends on your work ethic and level of self discipline. I have taken many courses over the internet and also during the summer. Definitely don't recommend taking ANY science classes over summer if you can avoid it. It is too short of time to really soak in what you are learning, and your science classes will be your MOST important classes to do well in if you are planning on applying for a nursing program. Are you strong in English and Math? I recommend taking English or Math over summer, or over the internet. If you are very self disciplined, they can come in handy because you can work around your own schedule if you take them online. Also, if you get them out of the way you can focus on your Science classes which is what is most important. Try not to take too many classes that you don't absolutely NEED for the nursing program application. Many times you will have at least a year after you actually apply to take these classes. If you must take a science over summer, take Chemistry. It's a lot of work but not as much memorizing and studying as your Bio classes will be. Just stay focused, sit down and come up with a good plan for your class schedule. It will help to have a list of visual goals to keep you on track! Enjoy and best of luck!

I took Algebra (10 weeks) and computer applications (5 weeks) over the summer last year. This summer I am taking Develomental Psychhology and U.S. History (both 5 weeks). My schhol required English I to be taken within the first 15 credits. My counselor helped with my plan and the advice was the perfect sequence for me. Sociology and computer apps were the easiest classes I've taken. Saved the sciences for regular semesters and very glad I did.

I think you could take anything except A&P II or Micro. Even A&P I you could do if you were very motivated.

I'm going with Statistics and Human Development. I'll be taking Human Development online thru my school and it lasts five weeks! I'm like Geez she's really going to give out major reading assignments for sure! I already have a deal on the textbook w/a classmate who is taking Human Development this semester.

As for Statistics (14 week course) I'm going to just barrel ahead and give it my best shot. I know myself pretty good so far and feel I can handle this. The class will be online as well but through a different school. A couple of people are moaning and groaning this semester about this class but I don't know how much effort they're putting into it and whether they even study!

I'd say get your non-science classes out of the way. I feel like you may miss out on some of the material if you rush through a summer session with sciences. My school pretty much does not have sciences for the summer nor mathematics- just a few but not like a fall or spring session. I'm thinking they know this reasoning also.

Good luck to you and let us know how your summer classes went in a couple of months! :):):)
