Hey everyone, I didn't see a thread for this yet so I thought I would start one.
Is anyone else applying to BC for Fall 2014/Winter 2015 cohorts? I'm getting nervous with the deadline less than two months away. I did all my pre reqs there and it's my first choice school which probably adds to the nerves a bit. Are any of you finished with the application process yet? I think it's nice that this year, the background check is after the initial application just for the sake of saving money if I didn't score high enough on my TEAS to get in.
I looked into the LPN program at South Seattle and a few things:
1. Like SeattleJess said, they only have conditional approval
2. I've heard their grads don't have a high pass rate on the NCLEX
3. The LPN - RN program does not give preference to their LPN grads
just a few things that really made we rethink my decision to even apply.
The LPN program at south seattle isn't that bad! I know the nursing program director and a couple of the faculty personally, and they all try really hard to advocate for their students. And everyone in the nursing department is super sweet and supportive!!!
It's true, the nursing program director is super sweet. She also may not be the best advocate for students. I say this based on my one experience with her when I applied to the nursing assistant class there for Summer 2013. The program director was extremely unprofessional, rude, and unhelpful. I asked to speak to the director and her response was, yes, the PD was nasty and unprofessional and she'd like to fire her but she, the director, didn't want to go through the hassle of dealing with the union to do that; she was hoping that the PD would be leaving in November 2013. She'd been getting an average of 3 complaints a day about the PD's behavior but now it was down to about five a week, so she was "getting better." The director asked me to suffer through dealing with her because "really nice" instructors were waiting on the other side of this entry point. I just couldn't bring myself to believe that an organization that operated that way could give me a good learning experience.
I also work with a nurse at Providence Mt. St. Vincent (an excellent care facility) who graduated from SSCC. She said the program was rife with violations and misconduct, that she'd complained several times to the state and that she would not recommend it to anyone who cared about getting a quality education.
I also had a bad experience taking chemistry there. The instructor pandered to the students, kept lowering the standards so marginal students could pass, condoned cheating and did not enforce safety standards in the lab. (I think she was trying for good student reviews so she could get more work there.) I was not impressed.
Only two events, and certainly not a statistically significant sample, but enough to turn me off South. I just think anyone considering SSCC should make a personal visit and really dig into the facts, including the points that bellucy raised. We are making such a big investment of time and money into our nursing education. We deserve schools with a high NCLEX pass rate and a good record of getting graduates jobs (like Bellevue and Shoreline.) Also, check out the clinicals that SSCC is able to offer. Clinicals are key to the networking that increases the chances we'll get a job on graduation.
If you investigate and find South is the place for you, then go for it! But please make an informed decision so you don't get any nasty surprises.
Whew, sorry to run on so long!
Seattlejess,
You asked about Shoreline CC's lab. I took a couple classes there fall quarter and was not impressed by their campus. Their lab equipment definitely needs to be updated. I took all my nursing pre-reqs at Western Washington University so I was used to up-to-date lab equipment and was disappointed in shoreline's classrooms. The teachers I had there were excellent though!
kkay29 and asl2204, thank you so much for your comments on Shoreline. Info from people with actual experience is valuable to me. If I am lucky enough to get into Shoreline, it will be a hard choice to make. (And for now I'm just really happy to have been accepted to a quality program like Bellevue's, with excellent clinicals. That's more important to me than shiny new labs, I think.)
Hi guys! I am #7 on the wait list and pray to the nurse gods that I receive a call!
here are some statistics I found from reading some of the previous years pages on this wonderful website!
2009-2010: 30 students taken from waitlist
2010-2011: 18 students
2011-2012: unknown
2012-2013: 15 students
2013-2014: 22 students
soo... Im keeping my hopes high but looking into other schools. I also saw that most people received calls/emails early June!
Congrats to all of you who got in!!! (:

South Seattle lost their state accreditation. Both the LPN and the RN programs are now on "conditional approval." Use caution!
