can't believe what they are doing ..

U.S.A. Colorado

 Hi I am one of those pre-nursing students in Colorado. I finished all the pre-requsits. As you know, there are some changes how to get in to the nursing program here in Colorado. (Have you heard of it ? If not, you need to contact your nursing department.. I have heard this from other students and called my nursing department the other day)

Now we need to compete with other people based on GPA, Previous degree, CNA certification, TEAS test..goes on.. they are putting all the points together and higer points get in first. However, the waiting list will be still there!:angryfire I was a litte upset because that means, we can't apply other school and if there are "higer points" students, you are just stuck. yes, they will send you letter saying "you are not accepted this semester" (that's what I understood) Even thou I think it is a good idea to accept smart students and make them comepete all that.. but WHY DO THEY STILL HAVE WAITING LIST? I guess I am the only one who is mad haha...

You know, if you were talking about C-,D students I could agree more. Part of nursing is personality and part is book smarts. So if you are below average on the book smarts part than that can obviously be a big problem. If you are below average on the personality part, it might not cause a problem when it comes to you maybe giving a medical dosage but it can be a problem in the kind of care that person is receiving on an emotional level when they are already at a high level stress time as it is.

I got C's (2.6 and 2.7) in my A and P classes in WA, here in CO those would be 2.0's because they have a different grading system here. I struggled with those classes for a factor of reasons, I did well in English (ironically since my grammar skills are below par and some spelling) 4.0's in Psych and Sociology, I got a B in Micro, (within 10 points of an A) and so far have a 126% in my 3 credit nutrition class and a B in Patho. Here in CO like I said, there is only 4.0, 3.0 and 2.0. So all together since I don't have my Patho and Nutrition done yet my Cumulative GPA would not be very high. It was enough to get into the Nursing Program, which I start in August, here they require a 2.5 GPA to get in which would be a C, but I have no doubt I will do well in Nursing School and be a wonderful nurse, I would even bet a large sum of money that I even become a better nurse than some of those 4.0 student.

There are many factors that go into being a good nurse, and while I will agree that the grades one can achieve will be a part of it, but not near all of it. There are many factors. I would support a 3.0 Min. to be put on the waitlist, maybe, but I think the 2.5 is good or even maybe a 2.8 so you would have to have basically a C+ average in that case.

Ok well before you can actually answer that, you need to start nursing school....im already an RN, big difference

Big difference in what?? Whether a average grade person can be a good nurse??? I don't need to be in school or done with NS to know that, I have personally met many of them and been cared for by them.

I know there is a % of dropouts each semester, my school has the statistics posted in the nursing handbook that you can look at online. It doesn't how many of those students have a High GPA though, I have a family member that was always a 4.0 student since grade school and in College. She dropped out of NS after one year because she said although the grades were easy for her, she realizes it was not the job for her. So I don't have to be a nurse yet to know that some high GPA students make crappy nurses and some medicore students make good nurses, hell George Bush Jr was a C student and he was elected president and half the country seems to think he was a wonderful president :| I will spare my own opinions on that though and it has nothing to actually do with what his GPA was LOL

No, Jackie, that's not what Prestige means. You start Nursing School--I promise you, after your first clinical rotation---you'll understand exactly what Prestige is saying.

You're about to enter a world that makes absolutely no sense, plays by its own rules, and the rules change without notice.

The very best of luck to you! Remember, leave all your illusions at home--they won't help you.

I am not sure what me gong to NS has to do with grades and being a good nurse. I am under no illusions for what's in store for me and that is why I have spent the last few years planning accordingly and preparing my children for how crazy and hectic life is going to become for the next 2 years.

I didn't denounce at all what Nursing School is like. All I did was comment that grades ALONE do not make a Good or Bad nurse. Their are more factors to it.

This is how life has been for me since as far back as I can remember. If I can make it through some of the most vial and disgusting things and craziness I have been put through so far in my life, I can make it through nursing school. I have no doubts about that. It's who I am and who I will always be. I do not break easy.

I will make sure to post when I graduate though, I have many doubts, fears, excitement and so on about starting in a few months, but I have NO DOUBT that I will make it!

Seems I here more often about waiting list, lottery type. and such. yet everyday you here about a nursing shortage dont add up:banghead:

Because, they conveniently leave off the word--"experienced"---experienced nursing shortage. :grn:

So. ahem...

Anyone from PPCC get the letter yet that gives us the official rules? I've heard about it but still i can't believe they changed it just when I finished my pre-reqs.

Also for the military spouses, the wait list for us is no more. This is from the dean of the nursing section that I ran into at the Falcon campus. Something about accreditdation or lack thereof.

I may look into the Radiology program at Memorial since it would probably be easier to get into that?......... but with how things are who knows..... :(

Well it is official. I just got my letter. Apps have to be in by April 13. Same as the rumers only now must have CNA or classes taken

I got my letter today as well. It's exactly like they stated except there isn't a breakdown of points except for the grades. How many extra points are they giving for a previous degree? The TEAS?, etc?. I guess I'll just have to go to the info session on March 26th to find out. I'm excited though but I wonder what I'm up against? No room to do the pre-reqs over unless you are going to wait until Fall 2010 to apply. So, how about PPCC students? GPA? TEAS exam date and score? My GPA is a 3.8 so, 38 points for that. I've taken my CNA class already (yeah)! No previous degree and my testing date for the TEAS is April 3rd!

Can you all type out what the letter said?

Also what are teas? is that the nurse entrance exam?

This is very true. For many RN positions, you will not even be considered unless you have EXPERIENCE and I personally forsee it getting increasingly difficult for new grads to get their foot in the door with CO hospitals in the next few years.
