I see so many sour faced nurses no matter which facility I go into. Sure, there are many problems that face the profession of nursing each day. But is it fair to the patients to be in a depressed or dissatisfied state of mine? We chose this profession for good reasons I hope. I see many threads on this website that offer a heap of problems with the underlying theme, "We are getting screwed!." With a pessimistic attitude how can any change come about? Let us remain positive despite many incidents of poor treatment of nursing. Let us pull out the positives in this profession and make a change. Our patients deserve this. Let us refuse nothing less than the God-given right to be content and happy. Let us become a harmonious voice spreading good news among our co-workers and supportive of our staff administration. Let us admit our faults and move on.
Life is too short to piss it away on a measure of unhappiness.

O.K. Pollyanna, we'll put on our happy shiney smiley faces while we're getting screwed. :)
Actually I agree with the point that we should not take out any negativity or stress on the patient. As hard is it might be we must keep a positive attitude for our patient's sake. I cringe when I hear a nurse say irritably to a patient "you're not my only patient, we're short staffed today, that's not a priority right now."
But perhaps in your zest to look for the bad in the nurses you are missing those of us who shine. Just a thought. Put on those rose-colored glasses and see the good in the people around you.

I agree with you there! I have met and been cared for by MANY absolutely amazing nurses.
There are some grumps out there, but I think the good ones outnumber the bad, by far. It's just that the grumpy nurses tend to stick in one's mind more. I try to focus on the good ones, like "ROXY, the drug lady", who had me cracking up while I was in labor for two days.
I agree with the OP, though, that a positive attitude CAN make ALL the difference!

on this same note, I have an employee who is constantly irritable, by her nature, (a nice gal but just irritable) who fusses @ whomever...whether it's pharmacy tech on the phone, the operator connecting a call for her, the supervisor. I have to contiually remind her (who is 12 years my senior & who trained me as a new grad- I am now her boss) that you'll get more results with sugar then with vinegar! So when she starts to use that tone or those words, I stop her verbally & remind her of this, (breathe!) & see the results. I know it's like dealing with children but sometimes this is how one has to be treated in our world. By the way, if I were ill in my CCU, I would have her care for me, her skills are excellent, but she does march to the beat of a different drummer. Maybe a different instrument all together!

OMG I just spat my coffee on the screen....Tweety why did you have to do that to me? You are too damn funny...:ro
By the way, I agree with the sentiments in your post; I need not elaborate further.
So buck up and be happy? Yea sometimes we can do that...I know where the OP is coming from----but I also know there are many sides to a given "sour puss'" I I love the challenge of breaking thru that facade and getting to know the sour puss well, often they are GREAT people inside with a story to tell. I dont' judge books by their covers, ya know?
I agree, a sour attitude must NOT ruin our days.....
I am off to sing "good ship lollypop" now as I head to work....hehehheeh....

well I don't understand why you think that a nurse who is in the dumps got into nursing for the wrong reasons. To me it sounds like another blame the nurses line of thinking. If so I disagree.
In fact, I think the nurse who is down in the dumps chronically is probably depressed from giving her all and finding out it is never enough. She probably needs some POSITIVE SUPPORT from her manager rather than yet another kick.
JMHO of course.

So VERY true.
I am one of those nurses!
I am expressing my heart-felt appreciation, understanding and empathy to all of us who continue to give our all, despite the many obstacles in our way.:kiss

I am sorry, but I just have to say it-
BARF.

OK, i'll ask.
So why the negative (mosty) thread starts?
Doesn't the change start within the person themselves?
