Bedadine for vaginal birth

Just a question does your hospital use mainly bedadine for lady partsl prep in a patient who is getting ready to deliver lady partslly or do you use soap and water to prep the patient. The hospital i work at uses mainly bedadine for the patient prep who is getting ready to deliver bedadine is widely used in our labor and delivery area's any feed back is greatly appriciated

We don't use any prep, except wiping away any stool that's passed while pushing. There's no evidence behind it.

The place where I started working as a new nurse used a boat of 4x4s, warm water and a healthy squirt of Phisoderm. Then I moved to a hospital that practiced EBM/EBP and we didn't do any lady partsl prep except, as Libra mentioned, cleaning off the perineum if there is stool there.

My hospital does not do any sort of wiping except if patient has a bowel movement during pushing.

We don't use a prep either. We just wipe away stool as needed.

We are still using a betadine prep and then washing off with a soap/water solution.

We don't do a lady partsl prep (as in anything internal) but most of our MD's do a sponge wiping of outer areas with betadine mixed with warm water. Our midwives do not.

no evidence to support any sort of perineal/vulvar prep for routine SVB. In fact with all the new data we are seeing regarding microbiomes and their effect on health, it's not unlikely that antiseptic preps are downright harmful. And anyway betadine is readily "inactivated" by the low lady partsl pH and the copious amounts of blood and other fluid at birth, and hibiclens has the potential for serious GU irritation. I guess a little soap and water would be fairly benign, as long as we make sure the baby doesn't get soap on their face.

Maybe it's just my woo, but I don't want my genitals and unborn baby's head to be dowsed in an antiseptic unless there is a clear indication of benefit.

I work in 2 differnt facilities in my community, one uses Betadine scrub for vag deliveries and the other does not do any prep at vag deliveries

Wow, the things that I would never think of mentioning to my care team before delivery.

"Please dont betadine my lady parts prior to delivery, thanks" never would have crossed my mind, but it will now!

Our hospital either uses Betadine or Hebiclens - OBs preference.
