Be honest, what pt behaviors do you find annoying?

Published

We are all supposed to love our jobs and most of us do! But we are all supposed to over look just danged annoying behaviors.

My pet peeve, I do not care for drama patients. You walk out in the hall and they are laughing and having fun with a visitor, they take one look at YOU looking at them and they are hanging on to the walls to help them walk and moaning in pain. I sometimes think my mere presence causes them harm... ;o)

Me: "Great! Your temp is normal!" Patient: "Oh, if it is normal I am SICK! My usual is 72(F).

Me: "Great! Your b/p is 120/70!" Patient: "Oh, if it is normal I am SICK! My usual is 50/10."

Why do people complain about having great vitals?

Pain is subjective. What might be a 5 to you might be a 10 to a person with a low pain threshold.

It's too bad you people don't take all this effort from patient bashing and use it say what you do like about your job and patients.

Please do not pooh on my thread and I promise not to pooh on yours.

Sometimes it seems like patients in the hospital think they have won the pain med lottery and want to take full advantage to get the most they can while they are there! It can be those with chronic pain on scheduled morphine or oxy who claim that doesn't take care of their current pain, they want more even when they are so drugged up already they can barely walk. Another pet peeve is the Dr's who always order some stupid amount like .2 of Dilaudid and then you have to find someone to waste the 2mg vial and then cheap pharmacy glass vials you have to break without cutting your fingers q 2 hours and you know the pt will be on the light q 2 hrs! Frankly .2 or .5 of dilaudid why even bother! Then don't forget to do a timely pain reassessment to which they will answer it barely did anything, unless your lucky and they are asleep. But whining gets to the me the most, a grown adult talking in a baby voice like they need to be held. That's just too weird for me.

It annoys me so much when at the end of shift I walk in with the oncoming shift and the patient or the family member says "oh by the way, *insert event that I should have known about * happened this morning" (-_-)

my favorite one was "oh my IV has been hurting since this morning." (Even though I consistently checked it throughout the day.)

I've also gotten "I forgot to tell the MD or social worker this important fact this morning during rounds and I need something done about it ASAP."[/quote"

Patient insisted on putting on a long sleeved shirt covering up IV said it was fine and then found it infiltrated, pt admitted it's been sore a while but I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to get stuck again!

I hate it when patients lie to me. Drives me nuts. I want to believe you have abdominal pain. I really do. I want to believe you have nausea, honestly. But, I know you came in because you ran out of pain meds on Friday and your clinic won't see you until Monday. Your poor planning does not provide a good enough reason for a two-day stay at the Hospital Hilton.

You can stop the fake dry heaving any time now. I like how it only happens when you see me in the hall. I'm sorry that my face causes you to suddenly clench your stomach and gag. If I walk off, come back, and stand quietly out of sight by the door, somehow you are cured every time. Maybe you should go home where you don't have to see me.

Little old ladies and gents who can't see, claim there fingers and hands are weak but insist on laying all twelve pills out on a tissue, examining them and then attempting to pick them up,one by one.Pick up the water, take a sip,put it down.Count the pills again. Take one.Pick up the water, take a sip,put it down......As the clock winds down .I love that they want to try to maintain independence but not during the med pass from hell.I am glad to review each pill, admin one by one on a spoon.Gladly.

Or you give them their pills in a cup and then they proceed to say what is this blue pill here? So for those patients I give them one at a time and sometimes pop them in their mouth if they have dropped or lost them before. lol

Oh yes! That will always happen to me for the patients I've popped 20+ pills out. Then they want to know the name of every pill. And I of course don't know.

Still a nursing student but so far the most annoying I found that we call are the "divas". Patients who can clearly use their arms well asking me to put cream all over their body, shave their legs, asking me to cut up all her food and put them in right place, constantly asking me to change their briefs every 10 minutes and most annoying, is asking to paint their nails. I didn't even care I told that patient straight up that this is a hospital, not a spa. Gone through 3 years of hard work studying to become a NURSE and not some kind of estitician. That same patient asked me if there will be someone coming in to paint her nails for her. She was always an attention seeker and she would make up anything just to get attention from the staff. I talked about this in post conference with my clinical group and professor and we all laughed about it. Like seriously... I couldn't stand being treated like a slave.

I use "10 is like you've been hit by a train or runover by a MACK truck."

I didn't see that thread, so it'd be hard to say. This thread I see as letting off some steam....and well within the boundaries of the ToS. So...not sure what the issue is, really.

I have certainly disliked the topic of some threads, but as I see it, I'm free to click the 'Back' button and move on in those cases.

Much like there are many channels on the TV, many channels on cable...there are many message boards and many threads to review. And they don't have to appeal to every single person on the planet in order to exist.

I suspect he meant the thread where the OP explained that she hated EVERYONE. And then wanted to be a nurse. Big difference between that thread and this one.

I've had three patients so far who've done this, but: repetitive yelling. For example: a patient rang his call bell this am for his early breakfast tray. We told him it would be up shortly. From that moment until the 15 minutes it came up, he screamed the word "breakfast" repeatedly until it came up. I was so annoyed!!!!

The mental image this gives me is hysterical. But I'd be seriously annoyed, too. I have one right now yelling for "Christmas! Hurry up! Christmas!"

I cant quote because im on the mobile version but the poster said the op of the other thread not this one

And it appears hes referring to this one https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-discussion/i-hate-people-999054.html

Popped up on my "must read" section. About to give it a read. 345 posts and still not shut down yet, should be good
