  1. Still a nursing student but so far the most annoying I found that we call are the "divas". Patients who can clearly use their arms well asking me to put cream all over their body, shave their legs, asking me to cut up all her food and put them in right place, constantly asking me to change their briefs every 10 minutes and most annoying, is asking to paint their nails. I didn't even care I told that patient straight up that this is a hospital, not a spa. Gone through 3 years of hard work studying to become a NURSE and not some kind of estitician. That same patient asked me if there will be someone coming in to paint her nails for her. She was always an attention seeker and she would make up anything just to get attention from the staff. I talked about this in post conference with my clinical group and professor and we all laughed about it. Like seriously... I couldn't stand being treated like a slave.
  2. Hello, any advice on where I should do my fourth year preceptorship in the hospital? A lot of people are telling me to go into a medical surgical floor. My dream is to be a CRNA or NP. I know that I need to have atleast 1-2 years of experience in ICU or emergency room to even get in. My professor recommended to start in telemetry/medical floor and hopefully get hired there then move up to ICU. Or should I just do medsurg since there are lots of nursing skills and easier for me to get hired in the hospital once I graduate? What do you nurses recommend? Much help appreciated :) Thank you Nadine
  3. i am a fitness-holic but the only time I ever go to gym is during holidays or summer because that's how stressful nursing school was. No matter what, studying was always a priority. even if i didnt' have to study, I needed to atleast do my readings to be prepared for the next lecture so i basically never had time to go to gym unless once in a blue moon. I did gain a lot of weight too since when im studying, i like to eat to cope with my stress. One advice is time management. Have an agenda and set a date and time on when you need to make sure to study and when to go to gym. Really need to work on TIME MANAGEMENT that is key in surviving nursing school.. other than studying and passing the program. lol :)
  4. You and I are the same. I am only 20 years old and already going into my fourth year of nursing. I was always the fun partying type and I worried about the same thing whether I will be able to have a social life or not alongside having a part time job. Nursing school teaches you many things but one important thing it had taught me the most was TIME MANAGEMENT. I was horrible at it in first year but as years went by I became an expert. I went through the hardest year (2nd year) of schooling studying and partying at the same time. You will learn when would be the right time to study, and when would be the right time to go out with friends. My friends totally understood my situation and they never made me feel bad about not going out. Work allowed me to take days off to study for exams. You HAVE to make nursing your first priority no matter what. It even came before my family because it is very easy to fail the program. The agenda saved and continues to save my life. It was like my bible. I had a small one so I can bring it everywhere with me. I put the dates I HAVE to make sure I study and set goals on what materials need to be studied and completed by certain time and day. Also, you will make TONS of friends in nursing school and you guys will never let go of each other. Don't you worry, nursing is the way to go. Remember, dont do it for the money do it for the passion of helping people. Hope this post helped a bit and goodluck in the future :)
  5. I will prioritize :) usually what i do is i do my assessments during bed bath. But I think I will just get down to business by getting vitals, accuchecks and assessments first, and do the morning care after. Thank you for your help :)
  6. AM care as in morning care. So bed bath/shower and oral care.
  7. Hello, I have a question. During clinical placement, I had to care for three patients for first time. My shift started at 7am and had to get my chartings done by 8. I got a red flag today since I couldn't get my charting done on time. Professor lectured me about time management, and for next week, he expects me to perform my head to toe assessments, and am care on 3 patients within an hour!!!!! I told my professor that it's literally impossible but he disagreed with me. To the nurses, how can you care for atleast 4-5 patients, and get your charting and assessments done in an hour or 2 since start of your shift??? I need help with time management because i personally dont think i can get vitals, assessments and do morning care within an hour. Also, most of the patients are complete care.
  8. I totally understand where you're coming from. I had the same exact problem. One day, I showed up to clinical without a worksheet (even though i showed her that it was done online) and she sent me home because I havent done my research for 3-4 medications since I couldn't find them on my drug book. Ever since that day, she kept targeting me. She always singled me out, humiliated me infront of my peers and I became getting really anxious and could not perform my work properly. I approached her and talked about it. She literally gave me no mercy which made me cry even more. She gave me an action plan for midterm so I went to talk to the coordinator because I could just not take it no more. I was miserable, stressed, anxious all the time, scared of failing. The coordinator helped me get through it and eventually I passed clinical. Moral of this story, these teachers only make you stronger. You will get to experience much worse than that. Now i am in third year, I feel stronger than before only because I know how to act in situations like that. So stay strong!!! you will get through the semester in peace
