BCIT January 2021

World Canada CA Programs

Hello, I am wondering if anyone else is applying for BCIT’s January 2021 intake? I thought I would start this thread so we could share our progress through the application process. Good luck!

Unfortunately not! Only did a few semesters before deciding to switch over to nursing instead.

That’s awesome!! Hoping we hear back soon, even if it’s just a quick update.

hey guys! I'm all new to nursing since I decided to apply at the last minute. This may be a stupid question but would anybody be kind enough to tell me why we can't apply for Casper test at the moment? When would be our next fastest date to take the test for September (now January due to Covid) application?

Hi everyone:))

So I will be applying for the September 2021 intake and I was wondering if I could get some advice from you guys. So currently, I have 37 credits and an overall GPA of 3.6. My highschool grades for math is 99 and Chemistry is 93 and English is 86. I also have experience of 3 years in retail and being a tutor for a year, as well as volunteering at a hospital gift shop for a year. I was wondering if my chances are looking good right now or how I can improve my application and what steps I should take. I would really appreciate your opinions!

Hi guys! Kinda stupid question, but want some advice. I'm planning on applying for the next intake.

I have a BSc. degree from UBC, I have B in A&P, and A's in everything but Psychology I have a C (69%)

I am just wondering if I should retake psych now (Sept-Dec'20) to improve my GPA. I am really conflicted. Would a C look bad in my application? Or is it a minor thing that they wouldn't really care too much for.

YOur suggestion would be greatly valued. Thanks!

Hey for those who’s applying for 2021 fall, here’s some information I received from the advisor.

The Nursing department does not give preference to applicants who complete prerequisites with BCIT and it is typical for applicants to do some or all of the post-secondary level prerequisites outside of BCIT.

For the mandatory applicant questionnaire, make sure to complete it fully and thoughtfully. The form cannot be expanded and anything written outside the box cannot be read. Attaching an extra pdf file is not an option. Include information, such as:

Relevant work experience – it does not have to be health related, it can be customer service experience, serving experience, etc. They want to see your ‘people care and interactions’

Showcase your leadership and teaching skills.

Demonstrate you can work with all types of people (different backgrounds/ages).

Travel experience – Have you travelled? Where have you gone? What did you do? What was your experience?

Provide examples of what you have done, not what you think nurses should know or do.

Volunteer experience is not mandatory, however, it’s recommended to showcase yourself with more than academics.

Volunteering can be in any customer service/community role. It is not restricted to patient care. What do you give to your community, your church, your social circle, your workplace – how do you give back?

Volunteer options: care home, hospital, rehab centre, food shelter, Special Olympics, hospital host, teaching assistant, student mentor, community centre.

For information on how to apply see:

http://www.bcit.ca/admission/apply/fulltime.shtml

Admission to the program is by competition and it can be very competitive as there is a high volume of interest in the program.

The Admissions office checks for the minimum entrance requirements and after the program closes to applications, all applicants who meet minimum requirements are referred to the Nursing department for review.  The Nursing department shortlists and invites those applicants to do the non-cognitive questionnaire and makes their final selections after that.

The Nursing department considers the following qualities of an applicant:

Applicants are ranked on a point system in the application review. Highest points to academics, second to work experience, and third to post-secondary GPA.

Academic qualifications. In recent competitions, competitive applicants had 70 post-secondary credits or more completed at the time of application.

Work experience.  General work experience is reviewed.  Having health-related work experience can enhance an application but it is not required.

Overall GPA.  Having a good GPA (e.g. 3.0 and above) may enhance an application.

Volunteer experience is not part of the ranking process, however, if all else is equal it may help to set the applicant apart.

I highly recommend to go to their info session. They did mention leadership experience will be an asset to. Good luck!!

Does anyone know if they're giving us updates this month or next month?

In the email it said “You will receive further information by the end of September, and be notified of your final status by October 31, 2020.” I guess we’ll find out our final status end of October?? It’s confusing.

Judging by past forums, most applicants got shortlisted sometime around the end of September. Beginning of October- final short listed applicants and end of October we will hear about our finalized status.

I hope so too! I’m applying with an 83% average with experience as a care aid, community support worker, 5 years of retail experience, and volunteer experience with a mental health and addictions centre. I was previously working on a different degree, but realized that nursing would be a better fit. What about you?

I have a similar profile as well!

I've been a care aide since April 2019 and my grades for pre reqs are

psych 1101 86%

chem 11 73%

engl 1177 78%

math0007 90%

CNST 1140 B+

Stat 1124 B+

Soci 1100 A-

My grades aren't too bad but I'm hoping work experience makes up for it!

Just finishing up my last course BHSC before applying in feb 2021 for sept 2021.

Also have  3 years of retail experience which helps a little with person interaction experience.

Hoping this looks good to get into the semester!
