Bariatric Care Centers/ Gastric bypass

Specialties Gastroenterology

Published

I am an LPN and on May 10th I underwent a gastric bypass at Bariatric Treatment (Care) Center in OHIO. I developed pancreatits after this surgery and had to be transported back to BTC for four more days but I am doing very well now. I have lost 25lbs in 3 weeks. I was wondering if anyone on here had had the surgery or knew anyone who had had it done. IT is great to be able to speak with others who had been down this road also. :) I am also interested in finding a video that shows the bypass being done but so far haven't been successful in finding anyone who knew where to find one. Can anyone be of help to me? It would be greatly appreciated. I enjoyed my clinicals through surgery and would like to see exactly how they did mine if possible. It was the Roux en Y. I think that is the correct spelling. My email address - michelle_(that is underscore)[email protected].

Thanks so much,

Michelle

Hello, I had this surgery too, on 4/9/2002, have lost 80 lbs so far ...feel free to PM me.

I had this surgery Oct 2002...doing wonderful. pm me

Hi everyone...

I had the bariatric surgery on December 4th and have lost 48 lbs thus far. It is the best thing I ever did. The post op course was a piece of sugar-free cake!

Any questions, pm me.

I am not trying to burst anyone's bubble ...... but, as a former ICU nurse, I would encourage anyone who is considering gastric bypass surgery to explore ALL options; and to research the procedure and its complications in depth!! We saw patients with other co-morbidities --- asthma, cor pulmonale, renal insufficiency, sleep apnea, etc. Bottom line -- BE CAREFUL. I have seen a huge range of folks, some who did OK, and some who did not make it out of the hospital. Not trying to be gloom and doom; I just think you need to be aware of the potential risks

I cannot help finding a video but I have a friend who has lost over 100 pounds in 10 months. She looks great and is now off all heart and diabetic medications.

I have had the surgery... The bariatric tx center may do it differently than my doc... Anyways.. I have lost over 300 lbs

Pm me.

Hi Michelle - I too have had "the" surgery. Was in December of 2001. Have not had a moments trouble and would do it again in a minute. I barely met the criteria. Was 5'2" and weighed in at 212 the day of surgery. To date I have lost 80# and feel wonderful.

I would recommend doing "exactly" what your doctor has instructed you to do. Chew, Chew, Chew your food. Do not drink while eating and take your vitamins religiously. Hopefully you are on some type of vitamin supplement.

I will tell you there will be a day when you will be able to eat more than you can right now. If you had as good a surgeon as I did he told you that is where you will have to make that life changing eating habit for yourself.

Good luck and take care of yourself. Of course, try to exercise (ugh).

I agree with DiannaM. I work on a med surgfloor that sees alot of bariatric patients. On of our pt has been back multiple times because of the surgery. This time in, they are thinking of putting a feeding tube in because she cannot keep anything down! congrats to all who have had the surgery and are making the lifelong commitment to health. I don't want to sound like I am against the procedure, but for every pt that is serious about their health, I am finding 2pt that feel this is a quick fix for weight loss and not looking at the long time commitment it takes to be healthy.
