Banner Nurse Fellows Program

Published

I interviewed for the nurse fellows program through Banner about three weeks ago and still haven't heard anything! I was talking to another girl there for an interview who said that her friend (I know, I know, don't listen to anything like this, but I can't help it!) got a call a week after her interview offering her a slot. Has anyone else interviewed and heard anything?

I don't know why I'm so freaking out about it. I'm already accepted into Mesa to start in January (I deferred) but I WANT TO GET INTO THIS!

There is no difference among the programs. Block II is probably the easiest to fail and then pass. That is the one success story among the people we picked up - the single student in Block II. All Block III and IV "pick-ups" have failed. Contract does not specify a certain % must pass.

I was just wondering because 100% of that Banner Program in Block II at CGCC passed compared to the Block II Traditional Program at CGCC with 13 or more students that failed (I did a re-count). Again, same instructors, same block, same school and same year (just different semester).

Just a thought, the difference between the Banner students and the non Banner students, may be the quality of students. I'm not dissing those that failed, but the Banner program does a good job of screening for high quality, dedicated people, particularly those who don't have any outside distractions such as work. Just another angle to exam. Being a teacher, I can tell you that even though the curriculum may be the same, its difference every go round with different students, its just a new dynamic with every set of students.

and you're basing this opinion on what experience?

Hello Cursed,

I am curious which part of the statement by MassagetoRN you are questioning.

I only interviewed for the Banner Program and do not know what is required for non-Banner fellows students, do they get interviewed as well? or are they placed as space becomes available?

I think Banner does do a fairly good job of making sure that people who are admitted to the program are sure that this is what they want and that they can commit the required hours to the program.

Do you disagree?

Thanks qaqueen!

Cursed Irishman,

As I stated, I myself am a teacher, granted, not of nursing. I have also almost 9 years in the community college system and am applying to the Banner program. I just think that its a bit unfair of the previous poster to imply that the same school with the same teachers are giving special treatment to the Banner students due to the affiliation with the Banner corp. There are always multiple factors to why a student fails. I hope this clears it all up for you.

I think you are absolutely correct. At least 50% of students in my cohort already had at least a BA/BS. Lots of older, career-changer types. Banner has the luxury of picking and choosing. That said, boy can they pick some real losers...But I guess a 75% pass rate isn't too shady...

I'm questioning this part. I have no experience w/ any other cohorts, but i know in mine there are only a handful of people who do NOT work, and there are NUMEROUS people who have 3+ children, so many, that for a while i thought it was an unwritten requirement....the distractions abound aplenty; sure the interview process weeds some people out, but as w/ all people driven operations, there are still the requisite number of people who you sit back and wonder, "how did they ever let you in here?"

DId you see that they finally have our schedules listed in Gateway and it is as I thought before

To MassagetoRN,

Just a thought, I had a classmate who failed our A&P 1 but passed and graduated from the Banner Program. I am not saying instructors give special consideration to the Banner Students, but perhaps they are just being more of a teacher compared to the traditional program where they gave way too advanced exams that are not from their lectures. In addition, the instructor in Block III do not accept other answers even if they are in the book. In fact, three of her questions were exactly the same with the questions that were on the CD in the other college's book, but her answers were totally different. So are you saying that the book is wrong? Furthermore, if only 2 out of 38 students passed the exam and the class average was at 61% then I would say it's not the students' problem, perhaps there something wrong with the teaching process. Moreover, many of us in class have high GPA's and have Bachelor Degrees, in fact some of my classmates wanted to continue their schooling to become Nurse Anesthetists and Nurse Practitioners because they are smart people, however they also fail in class, what's up with that? probably because the answers to their tests are not coming from the intructor's lectures, books or even google, it's whatever the instructor wanted to pick depending on her mood :lol2:. BTW, many students say she's a psycho. You can't really judge the students who failed unless you're in their program :nono:. As I said before, I passed that Block with many students who failed but I wouldn't judge them because I know how it was like... I guess passing that block was kind of like a lottery!

SN11,

I know this may be a shock to all, but teachers are human. Believe me, I work one these "tech schools" and sometimes the people that they have teaching gives me the willies. Not all teachers are good, and even the good ones have tough times or off modules. So, this one particular teacher does sound psycho, but if so many students are failing or the tests are so off, why wasn't the dean involved? Sometimes as a student, you have to fight for the education you are paying for.

I think that some readers may have taken my earlier post wrong. I am not saying that those students who fail are bad students. I was merely pointing out that there are many aspects to why a student fails, and its never 100% the student or teacher's fault.

"Why wasn't the dean involved?" I actually talked to the student who survived and was part of the first batch of Nursing who graduated at CGCC and she mentioned to me that they would always talk to the dean about this professor, and they would tell her that this professor does not respect students in addition to not testing them on what this instructor has lectured (she would also ask questions that she said we should have known since Block I and II, but how does she know if we learned those in Block I and II? [actually we didn't]). Anyways, this student also mentioned that they would always go to the dean every after exams but I guess it didn't help, this instructor is still there teaching (I heard that the dean is scared of this psycho instructor haha! :lol2:) I also heard from a student at MCC that this instructor got caught changing answers on scantrons from other school (this student was there then moved to MCC) she said this instructor really want to fail students. Also, I talked to the advisor from other school to apply and transfer and he said that he is surprised that this instructor is still teaching (BLock III).

In regards to what happened in Block II with so many students who failed, believe me, the President got involved in that issue. Perhaps, this was part of the reasons why those instructors improved their teaching to the next batch which was the Banner Students. As to the Block III Instructor? nothing has changed yet, I guess students are too scared to do something because the instructors in Block II are actually a lot nicer and definitely not psycho's compared to this Block III professor.

Hey, I'm starting March '08 too!!!!
