The thing about Balto. as in many city neighborhoods is that the conditions can vary greatly from block to block. If you are between U of MD and the inner harbor you are probably fine especially if you are in one of the larger loft apartment buildings. If you are in pigtown, imvho, not so fabulous. If you don't like your apartment there are some wonderful city neighborhoods to live in but expect to pay. Definitely do a nighttime drive by before signing anything. Good luck and welcome!

I have lived in Baltimore my entire life, and I have to tell you honestly that the city is not very safe. We have one of the highest murder rates in the country (maybe the world).

I highly suggest you move to Baltimore County rather than move directly into the city, especially since you do not know the area. Jules is right, you can be in a very nice place one minute and in a very bad neighborhood one block over.

i sure wouldn't want to live in the city, although the travelers we have who live across from the hipodrome love it. i live in a lovely, safe area in north anne arundel county!

I agree with the others. You should live outside of the city until you become familiar with the area. Sad to say, but there are only a few safe areas in the city, but even there the violence sometimes crosses over. Just this past week, some lady was savagely beaten on a bus by a large group of middle schoolers. There have been at least three similar incidents in the last year... some of them in the "good" areas.

I just heard about this yesterday ... how horrible!! I feel so bad for that woman.

I just wanted to add-- for those investigating living in Baltimore City-- be aware that Pigtown is now officially called Washington Village.

If you want a nice less than 30 minute commute, or the option to use the light rail to get to work (Baltimore's above-ground train), consider such Baltimore County areas as Timonium or Cockeysville.

Best of luck,

LOL they can call it Martha Washington Village if they want to: that area has been in trouble for at least 15 years now and no amount of money they throw there in cheap housing incentives has made a lick of difference.

LOLOL...like changing the name changes the clientele that lives there!!!! The one thing I don't understand since I moved here is WHY on earth tear down the areas where all the violence goes on and scatter these gutter snipes throughout the city and B-more county? Looks like resources would be better served if you knew where all the trouble is at to start with!!! example...cardboard village, O'Donnell heights and others. Like moving ppl is going to change their lifestyle....right.

I live in Essex and its not a bad place to live.

thank you all for your feedbacks. kind of scard about moving to B-more and i don't know anybody there!!! i guess i will be looking to stay in owings mills... hope that is safe place to be..... i hope i will love the place and looiking forward to be there in July/Aug 2008.

Sarah,

As far as cities go, imo, its an awesome place. Big enough to have lots of cool stuff to do and funky people but not so huge that you feel overwhelmed. Its fairly reasonable to live there especially compared to DC and the people are generally very friendly. You will do fine. Welcome, Jules

I love that you know where Cardboard City is! :lol2:

Sarah, Owings Mills is on the west side of Baltimore County and it is pretty nice.
