Background check/drug screen before clinicals

Published

I got a letter today that all students and instructors will be required to have a background check and drug screen before clinicals this fall semester. Does your school require this?

I graduated May 2006, and yes my school required a drug screen and a background check. Before we could start our clinical rotations, I guess it's something new. The school told us that I was the hospitals that we did our clinicals at that were requiring the background check. They told us at the last minute and we had to pay for both.

I'm starting Fall '06, and my school requires it before you start classes, their wording was if you can't do the clinicals b/c of a positive drug test, we won't enroll you in the school since you can't pass w/o clinicals - we didn't have to pay for it, though.

It is also a "last minute" thing in this case too. I don't have a problem with with it (I have no record whatsoever). Actually, I've wondered why there isn't a policy in place before even accepting students into any nursing program regarding a background check/random drug screen. The fee for us is $75 and I'll find out more in the next couple weeks. Thanks for your replies! ;)

Many schools do require a background check prior to being accepted. And some states require a background check BEFORE you are granted your letter to test for NCLEX. I think that the majority of employers have a pre-employment drug screen in place....altho the hospital that I am currently working at didn't!! Talk about SHOCKED!!;)

At our school, it depends on the hospital you choose for clinicals. I know of at least one that requires this.

The background check was mandatory for everyone. The drug test depended on which hospital you were assigned to. Some hospitals required it, others didn't.

My school makes us get a background check, drug test, and child abuse clearance check before we start classes. They say the hospitals want these things.

Our school required an abuse background check prior to admission and a criminal background check prior to start of clinicals that has to be redone every year you are in school. We have to pay for it ourselves but luckily it's only $7. It used to be done once on admission but the clinical sites changed the request to yearly.

We're required to have a background check done, I had to send in $50 for it along with my deposit to hold my spot in the program. I haven't heard anything about drug testing but it wouldn't suprise me one bit if it ends up being required (like a lot of the others said, it may just depend on the clinical facility)

Will a person be denied if they take medication for anxiety? That is my only worry as far as that is concerned??

My school requires a state background check and a child abuse clearance. Also, for people like myself who is from out of state, they require a FBI background check.
