Hello prospective NP students!
I wanted to start a thread for anyone applying to APU ELM program for the 2016 academic year! We can talk about anything you guys want! Your status, GPA, stats, interviews, and application process!
I just finished applying and speaking with the advisor!
Best of luck for everyone!
Hello guys,
Just to give you the heads up about the way APU admissions work, for those who wonder, it depends mainly on 2 factors:
1/ Have you completed all your pre-requisite course with at least a couple of A's?
2/ Will you be able to pay for tuition with either financial aid or personal funds?
If you can meet these 2 requirements, specially #2, then most likely than not you will get in.
@COLOWO, the ELM deadline was extended to around 07/25. I first applied to IE, I submitted everything by 05/01/15, but had not heard from IE. I had a change of heart on campuses around 07/14 and switched over to SD, but even by then I hadn't heard from IE. Five days later, by 07/21, SD had contacted me to set up an interview. It was night and day difference from IE to SD as far as response time and follow-up. I know that the main IE rep had been out on maternity leave and then there were some people that replaced her. The last person I spoke to there had been very nice. Maybe there was an influx of applications? But, I had submitted by completed application by 05/01 and still had to wait and even then, one of my transcripts had not been received! RD @ SD was on it, she took care of it ASAP! It also was confusing to me because IE told me I could not apply until all my classes were completed and now I hear that some people still have classes in progress and still had an interview! I wish I would have know that and maybe applied for Spring 2016, but all in all I am sure things worked out the way they were supposed to. Despite what the previous person posted, admission criteria encompasses more than your ability to pay! Email me and I can give you the contact names @ IE and SD if you like.
Best of luck :)
@YUYU1219 thank you so much that was really helpful information. I submitted all my documents by July 1st. The person I was in contact with was Judith and Mitchelle. I'm not getting much information from them. My email is [email protected]. Please email me the information you have. Thank you.
@ienurse How do I know? I attended APU. I remember that all or nearly all qualified applicants were offered admission. The ELM program at APU doesn't receive a huge amount of applicants unlike CC or public universities. The reason behind this is that Azusa is a private school, and while there even more expensive schools, it is still much more expensive than a publicly funded program and money makes sense to a lot of people.
Most students have to apply for financial aid and that is done through them. Fafsa will loan you enough money to afford tuition.
To be financially viable the school has to fill each cohort, and to ensure this will accept nearly anyone as long as they meet the basic requirements. They even engage in questionable behaviors to ensure prospective students choose APU. I remember the program director saying that ADN prepared nurses wouldn't be able to find jobs, and that the school NCLEX passing rate was 100% which conflicts with what the CAlifornia BRN's website says...
This being said the school is legit. I bet (and hope for you if this is what you want) everyone on this thread will get in, mark my words.
Sup @adamastor, thanks for the post. I figured as much with APU. I wasn't too worried about admissions but I still have my alternative schools just in case; especially since I told the director that I would decline to go anywhere but at the SD campus because I just can't commute anymore. Oh and you're right, the 2012-2013 latest pass rates for APU MSN are pretty close at 94.4% but that's def not 100%.
But can I ask you what you thought of the APU ELM program? Do you have any tips or words of wisdom for us? I get that it's legit but do you think the money, time, and effort were worth it? I'd like your input especially regarding the preceptorships and job search process as an RN and then MSN. The only two EL MSN programs in SD are USD ($1000/unit) and APU ($627/unit) so there's not many choices down here.
I just don't want to get caught in a financial bind:
I work full time at a hospital. I was reallllllllyyyy hoping to keep my night shift and then come to class during days (if I get accepted). But looking at the schedule from the orientation video it looks like we really only get Tuesdays off. I was secretly hoping to skip free lab days but I read on another thread that that was a no-no since it was highly recommended that you go.
I'm already too exhausted as it is. Per the other guy's post, they did ask me during the interview how I was going to pay for the program. I told them that I was saving money for a down payment for a house but that I would probably just use it for my tuition. My employer once offered to send anyone to school to get their BSN but the scholarship money for that has since dried up so now I'm def wondering if I can really do the full-time school and work thing again because it killed me last time.
I read that students at APU usually try to work but it only lasts the first semester (when there are like 15 vs 19 units) then they give up and have to quit working. What will you be doing @YUYU?

I think that is the hardest part of all this. We all worked really hard just to get to the point of being able to apply. However, when you apply, there aren't any guarantees. I've been trying not to dwell on it but that is easier said than done. I have been looking at the previous Summer ELM forum posts and it seems that 2 years ago APU said they would get back in early September but ended up getting out to people the last week of August. I'm not expecting that but it would absolutely be nice. The IE campus told me that the APU committee would meet for all the campuses on the last day of August to make decisions and that they would be getting out to everyone by the second week of September. I start another semester on Tuesday, which I am sure will take my mind off of this - feels good to be working on the final prerequisite.
