Australian nurse wanting to work in America

Hello! I am an Aussie RN from Melbourne Australia. I am very interested in working as a nurse in America due to family reasons. Especially interested in Tennessee, Texas, Kentucky, North Carolina, Colorado or Arizona. I have completed a 3 year bachelor course in Australia and am concerned that I may not have the required obstetrics and pediatric hours required. Is there a course I complete in Melbourne or even in the USA to make up these hours? I would love to know where to begin the process of moving to the USA. i would like to add that i was an IV drug endorsed enrolled nurse for 5 years prior to an RN in case that helps. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

Dear AussieNurse123,

Thank you for your post to this thread. Good on you - for stepping up to the role by going as LPN and then to RN. You got the OB/Peds you needed in the classes you did. Whilst it was a long process you took the rewards from it. Very impressive! No doubt about it, it is a long process to work in the USA. It can be done!

Out of interest where are you working in NC?

Best of Luck to You, thanks for sharing.

@Aussienurse123:

Hi

I have same problem like everyone here just recently graduated from ACU. Can you send me email address of yours ? I would like to ask couple question regarding LPN.

Regards,

Ann

Am very very glad to see some happy successful application stories!

Does anyone have information on transferring Aus RN directly to Idaho or Washington state? Either direct application to these states or VIA NY?

I already have a masters in nursing practice (critical care) and the thought of going back to school for the paeds/obs hurdle hurts my soul right now.

I just want to let people know if anyone is looking at this thread later or following now.

As an Australian Educated RN with no further study and two years of various applications.

I just got my ATT from New York State today by following the above advice. And I am absolutely ecstatic! All of the uncertainty has just washed away from me.

I'll let you know when I'm registered in Texas. ?

Thanks all!

Hi guys

could I know if once you get your NY licence can you apply for other states other than texas or would they ask for paeds/obs too? Has anyone done this?

Secondly, could I know why everyone is wanting to head to Texas ??

Hi Caramel79,

My understanding is that once you are licensed to a State in the USA then you can endorse to other States. If you have any concerns notify the State you are wishing to join.

When you fill in the application for endorsement they will be verifying your information anyway and I think if there was a problem they would notify you.

Hope that is not too confusing.

As to why is everyone heading to Texas - not sure on that - good cost of living and maybe is where the need is right now.

Good Luck in your endeavors.

I recommend trying to work as an LPN initially if you’re deficient in those areas. The board of nursing North Carolina allowed me to do that and I actually found it to be a great transition to American nursing as many things here are different. Also pay is approximately $67,000 AUD/ year In my state (in the USA) which isn’t bad for full time day shift work. I wasn’t getting much more than that as an RN in Australia anyway.

Many hospitals will then have cheaper education for staff as most hospitals are linked to University’s here. I took that opportunity to then take on OB/PEDS classes I needed. So it was a long journey to become an RN again here in the USA. but working as a LPN in the mean time made it a lot less stressful and I was learning so much in the healthcare field that I love so much everyday- which made the NCLEX RN easier also.

Hello , will they accept Australian  bachelor in nursing education    to take LPN NCLEX LPN? or need to study LPN course again ? I will be greatful if you could advise me as I am getting really stress as  My bachelor in nursing was not accepted for NCLEX and have to take few courses to sit for NCLEX exam

thankyou

Hi Everyone,

I got my USA license because of reading all the posts on allnurses (including this one).

I graduated from ACU in Sydney 12 years ago, Trying to get the license in WA but CGFNS CES reports said the deficit in pediatric clinical hours. Contacted all the colleges + universities in WA, they don't provide single-subject courses. Also, covid19 has made the situation worse.

Then, I tried Montana BON, and lucky I was able to sit for my NCLEX-RN exam. So, currently registered as RN with Montana BON.

Annie
