Austin Community College - ACC - Spring '11 hopefuls

Published

Hi ya'll-

Thought I'd get this started for the rest of us who, sadly, did not make it in for Fall 2010. I'm hoping to re-submit my application for Spring today (or this week). Does anyone know, do we receive the form from the nursing office? Or, is this something we should grab from the website?

My score upon re-applying will be 54.899. Dang, sure am hoping this will be high enough and get me in this round!

How's everyone else holding up? Did everyone complete the pre-req - 1105 already? I have not and won't (due to extenuating circumstances) until early Fall. Will this negatively impact my chances of getting accepted? According to Tammy and the office, no. But, wanting to get everyone's input. Hoping we will hear about acceptance by Sept. Does anyone know this date for sure? The application period closed July 15, don't know why it takes them so long to get this word out.

Anyway- good luck to you. This is my 3rd round of applying :( so I sure am ready to get in and get on with this career change!

Ya'll will have fun! Nursing Skills is a fun class if you haven't had any previous medical field experience. Let me know if ya'll have any questions about the course. I took the hybrid version this past January.

Thanks radiation! :)

I'm out. Really sucks. I think sometimes I'm too much of an optimist.

Ya I'm in the same boat as you. I thought there was a small chance of getting into the nursing skills class. Next semester I guess

I had a rank of 49 and didn't get a petition. I wasn't expecting to, though. ACC didn't accept my Human Growth and Development course, so I lost a ranking multiplier. Oh well. I'm registered for HG&D this fall and will reapply in January.

September 2011 Fall Hopefuls it is!

Woah, I was a 50 something, and I got a petition. These things are like the Olympics. Every tenth or fraction counts. ;\

I am in with a rank of 50.15. Guess I know I barely made it in. Whew.

congrats, everyone....and don't give up to those who have to reapply next time (which I may be in that boat after it is all said and done!)

Wow this is so different from when I got the petition for Spring 2010 nursing skills. They were wanting people ranked 47 and above to ask for petitions. Just goes to show that the competition keeps getting more and more intense as the semesters progress.

The tests in nursing skills are tricky but they are good preparation for the kinds of tests we will be facing in nursing school. It's true what they say about a "whole new way of thinking" when it comes down to these exams. And the skills mastery check offs can be really nerve racking. My tip for that....practice practice practice. The instructors are really cool on the check offs though, at least mine were. While you are going through the "procedure" on your partner or mannequin, they really encourage you to talk about the rationales behind everything you are doing. So even if technically your order of doing the skills wasn't what the instructor was looking for, as long as you provided a good rationale as to why you did what you did, they were more lenient.

For example, on some of the checkoffs you are given a patient scenario like :

You are a day nurse just coming on shift at 0700 and you are assigned Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith is an elderly man with diabetes and has been admitted to your floor for altered mental status and incontinence. Your duties will include :

Morning vital signs

Assessment

Linen change

Bed bath

Meds

Write out a plan of care in the order of priority.

I had a scenario like this for one check off and I listed my priorities as

1) Linen change

2) Vital signs

3) Meds

4) Bed Bath

5) Assessment

My instructor had my # 2 as being # 1 and she asked me why I chose linen change first. I explained that according to my patient's info sheet, he has altered mental status, diabetes, and incontinence. So I explained that my patient most likely needed a brief change and since he had diabetes I was more concerned with getting the wet brief off his skin in helps of preventing skin breakdown since any wounds this patient might get would be slow healing due to diabetes. Vital signs would come next because I would want those readings before giving any kinds of meds and that bed bath/assessment would happen almost simultaneously.

She was impressed with my thinking and didn't mark what I did as wrong. In fact, she even changed her answer sheet. :D

I had a rank of 49 and didn't get a petition.

Man I must have just scraped by I had a 49.83 and got a petition . Dont lose hope somebody will probable defer.

Good luck!

Thanks Radiation for being so forthcoming with ur Nursing Skills experience. You're input is very helpful. I have several friends in nursing school (level 4) and it's like pulling teeth just trying to get any information from them. They just really won't give me any advice. I know it's competitive, but I'm not even at their level, so what's the big deal?! I've learned more from this site about "what to expect" than asking them. I just got my petition into Nursing Skills and this is my second time around. Good luck to everyone!:redbeathe

Hi,

Has anyone heard if they are still:confused: sending petitions for nursing skills. They still have like 23 or so spots left and I wonder if they will send more letters before the semester starts. Congratulations to all who got petitions for nursing skills!

hi, I would contact the nursing office and ask them just to make sure since it has already been about 2 weeks since they sent them out. good luck!
