Austin Community College (ACC) - Fall 2010 Hopefuls

Published

I'm a Fall 2010 applicant at ACC and thought it would be nice for all the Fall 2010 hopefuls to have our own thread to share exciting news, information, and support with each other.

I turned in my application last Friday (Dec. 18th) after taking the HESI exam. I feel good about my scores but I anticipate competition for the Fall spots is going to be quite fierce. After that large applicant pool for Spring I think we will see a lot of re-applicants applying with the 5 extra re-application points. Not sure what that will mean for the ranking scores but it will be interesting to see . . .

Good luck to all the Fall 2010 applicants!

Did they post when they sent e-mails out last year on the web site to find out when or did you e-mail them asking? I would love to find out how we can find out when the e-mails are going out since the letter probably will come after them. I don't want to call them cause i hear is they get irritated with everyone calling:devil:

I didn't get anything in the mail. Email was the way they let us all know. And yes, they changed the status on the ADN website to something along the lines of "Letters of acceptance have been sent."

I have a question for anyone that knows the answer. Can you use a calculator on the HESI exam?

Thanks

nicolet - yes, you can use a basic calculator.

Thanks..... can it be a calculator that have the different formulas in it? Or just a plain has nothing calculator?

Thanks

Yes, they even provide them also

The math section is basic math stuff, you don't need any formulas. Just know your conversions and the recommended hesi guide had everything that was on the test. Its not hard if you know your conversions and studied the hesi guide book

Heck, I don't even remember them checking my calculator at the HESI test. They seemed to be more strict about calculators when I would take my dosage exams at the testing centers! :lol2:

I was surprised with how relaxed they were during the whole HESI experience. From the website it made it seem like no outside materials were going to be allowed inside the testing room. I did some last minute review in my car before going to the room and I was so surprised to see everyone sitting on the floor in the hallway with study material and backpacks.

Apparently the people in ADN said that they will not process re-apps before letters have been mailed out. They will only do it after they have been mailed. At least i won't have to worry about going down sat or next week when the spring 2011 period opens.

I'm taking my HESI on the 21st and am starting to freak out about the 1105 class. When and how am I supposed to register for it? I have all my pre and co reqs along with the other application materials finished. I was planning on applying this June for the Spring 11 semester but I'm just missing that Nursing Skills class. Also, do we need to study the physics section for the HESI exam? What's the difference between EVC and CEC? Any advice/help is greatly appreciated.

bluetrumpet - once you submit your application for Spring 2011 the ADN office will send out a ranking sheet with your GPA and total points. Keep an eye out on the ADN website announcements. When I applied for Fall 2010, I submitted my application right after doing my HESI on December 18th. A couple weeks later the ADN site had posted an announcement asking anyone who had a ranking of 47 points or higher to send the department an email and they would send you permission to register for the Nursing Skills classes that started in January. That is how it was done for us. I took the hybrid 1105 and our class only had like 15 people in it. So we were far from full. I know the other classes were pretty full though.

Submit your application when they start accepting them, tally up your own ranking points for yourself so you can keep that number in your head and make sure it matches what the department sends you then keep an eye out for the ADN website announcements.

The difference between EVC and CEC is location and instructors. Both are onsite options and I believe the schedules are close to the same as far as being on campus and clinicals all week.

There is no physics at all on there. The major proportion of the test is the multiple choice section of the reading where you read and answer questions. I would recommend taking this first and take this portion slow, don't rush it. The math is very basic stuff and the recommended hesi booklet covers everything you need. The 3rd graded portion is the anatomy/physiology. there aren't as many questions on this. Then there are two other protions that are not graded, the perosnality test and the critical thinking portion. After you take the Hesi ont he 21 you can go straight to the adn office and submit the application where they'll time stamp it. It is important now to get your application in as early as possible because the huge number of applications and they rank alike scores like 53 by the time they came in. Someone with a 53 who sent their application on the 21 will be ranked ahead of someone who sent it in on the 31 and there can be alot of people with your score and so you want to get your application in earlier then them so you get ranked above them. You will recieve an e-mail with you score and make sure it matched what you calculated. It is (GPA X number of classes out of 10 possible completed) + 6 points for first time applicant + Number of points from the hesi (A=10, B=7, 75-79= 4). For instance i had a 4.0 GPA X 10 Classes + 6 points for first applicant + 7 points from the hesi = to get a 53 ranking score. I reccomend trying hard to get a A on teh Hesi because it will help you alot with the 10 points. I only had one day to study due to health reasons and got a B. Then, according to the ADN home page on the right side where they post annoucments they said "Fall RNSG 1105 petitions will not be given until the application period ends July 15th.Students will be notified via ACC Gmail accounts." Once you recieve a petiton you can register. The cut off will probaly be 47 or better.Then..... You have to wait. If you don't get a petition either your score did not make the cut off and you probably won't get into nursing school that semester since rnsg 1105 is pre-req or the adn people made a mistake. If you didn't get a petition when you believe that you should have call them and check. Not much you can do but wait. Make sure you give your all on the HESI because you will need every point you can get because the competivness is riducuolous. Eventually the cut of score for nursing school will get over 56 probably, making first time applicants wait at least one semster. hope this helps
