Austin Community College (ACC)

WELCOME to the site! ACC is a large program and does serve a huge city. There waitlist is been getting shorter and shorter. It used to be years to even gt on the list. A lot has changed in the past year or two. Personally, I say check out Temple College, they have a campus in Taylor (only 20 miles from Austin). It is well worth the drive and less applicants to compete with. Their pass rate is better than most schools in the state and they do require HESI score of 850 or you cannot graduate either the LVN or ADN programs. Check it out and compare. Sorry I can't a be more specific with ACCs wait list but a friend of mine teachs there and I know they have be increasing their classes each year to accomadate more students.

Don't be intimidated by ACC! I graduated there in 2005 from the 1st Fastrack (15 month) program thehy no longer offer. Most of the instructors are AWESOME! When I started, I was so scared and thought- wow, I'll never make it- it is so long to graduation! Just take one day at a time and before long YOU will look back at these posts as a graduate. ACC has almost doubled the RN program in the last year so if your grades are at all decent and if you've completed most or close to most of your pre-reqs and co-reqs, you have a very good chance of getting in. When I was in your position, I called and was able to find out what the cut-off had been for the previous two semesters.

I'm a third-semester RN student at ACC. I applied in January of 07 and got in right away with a solid A/B avg in my prereqs. When I was on campus last fall, there were signs encouraging students who were still in the process of completing prereqs to apply because they had too many vacant seats after they doubled the number of students starting the program each semester (in the past, prereqs had to be entirely completed before application to the program).

You have a great chance of getting in right away. They are looking to eliminate the wait period altogether, and a lot of that is because of pressure from local hospitals (in the fall of 2006, the local hospitals gave the ADN program an $875,000 grant to fund more faculty positions and student seats).

They have hired on more teachers and so the waiting list is alot shorter. I am in my final semester, graduate next week woot woot! and when I first applied it took 2 years b/4 I got in. The wait is no where near that now though. IT is a great school with great teachers who really do care and want you to be safe. Did you ever get in?? I can't remember what the cutt off rank was. It is great to see some other nursing students at ACC on here! I just finished my first semester of pre and co-reqs which involved taking Anatomy and Human Growth and Development. Whoever needs advice on a great Anatomy professor, I definitely recommend **** ****....she was AWESOME!! I am registered for Pharmacology (***** *****) at Eastview, Intro to Microbiology (**** *****) at Cypress Creek, and Intro to Philosophy (*****) at the South Austin Campus. So that just leaves me with Physiology and a Speech class left before I can apply for the fall of 2010 class.

I have been told by 2 different professors and many other students that taking Physiology in the summer is NOT recommended because of the difficulty of the course in general and taking it in such a shortened semester leads to a higher failure rate. Can anyone on here recommend a great Physiology proffesor? And has anyone here ever taken Physiology during the summer?

I took phys in the fall with **** *******. He's okay, overall very fair and reasonable. He has 25+ experience teaching physiology. If I remember correctly he curved the exams.

I don't recommend any class in the summer! But I know that taking summer classes means you can apply for the spring semester, so if you're up to the challenge go for it so you can get your application in.

The prereqs seemed to drag on forever, but once you're in the RN program the time will fly. I graduate in May and it feels like I just started!

I took Anatomy during the summer with a hard instructor, I learned a lot and I got an "A." I personally don't see the big deal about Physiology in the summer, IMO it was nice to have class 4 days per week instead of 2. If you are disciplined and can study often (as you need to be for the RN program) and already get good grades you'll do fine. I would only do it though if it will enable you to apply earlier than anticipated, if not then definitely take your time. I took Vangorkam at Cypress and he was a great instructor. You'll definitely not be disappointed with ****, I only wish I could of had her for all of my classes. One more thing...**** **** does online Pharm and it is the same as her class. I hear the class is super boring though and that she is very monotone. Anyhow just my . Good luck!!

Actually the deadline for Spring is July 1st...summer classes do not count for Spring start. They extended it once and it is posted on the website now that there will not be any extensions.

Yeah, after I realized a few days ago that even if I did stress and take Physiology in the summer, I would still miss the deadline for the January 2010 class. So I am just going to wait and cross my fingers and hope I can get **** ****** for Physiology in the fall of 2009 and just take an easy online Speech course in the summer. That way I can apply in January for the August 2010 class. **** *********** was actually one of the professors who told me that he would do anything NOT to teach Physiology in the summer again because he did not like the shortened time frame to teach all that info and ******* **** also agreed to that.

The only drawback to trying to take ****** for Physiology is that she usually teaches during the day, and I work 40 hrs a week at a radiation clinic monday through friday 8-5pm, and my boss is usually understanding to work around my school schedule, so hopefully she will be that way when that time rolls around.

Okay I have one more question. I was reading through the ACC ADN website and it says that you take the HESI test a few times throughout the program and not just at the beginning to get in. My question is, is this the same HESI test that the pre-nursing students take or are they different versions that you take throughout the RN program depending on the level of nursing school you are in?

Is there a good HESI study guide besides the one the website recommends? I have heard the one the website recommends isn't really helpful.
