Attention Nurses....

Nurses General Nursing

Updated:   Published

I would like to get some feedback from a few nurses on the following topic:

What is your personal nursing philosophy? How does your philosophy affect you as a nurse? How long did it take in your nursing career to develop your own philosophy on nursing? What advice do you have to new nurses wanting to develop their own nursing philosophy? Has anyone influenced your nursing philosophy directly?

If you answered one or all, thanks! It is greatly appreciated.

hey now, no need to get defensive. But seriously, we have all had homework assignments that we have had to answer those questions. i think i had like 3 maybe 4. I really BS'd my way through that one quoting the good ol' Florence! yes, my professors loved that. i knew it was really cheesy but they loved it.

So im just saying...we've all had these assignments, and people get assignments where they have to interview other nurses. So it SOUNDED like it would be a good homework assignment.

That is all.

Well, I guess I did get a little offended. I thought I had come up with a good question to ask here on AN.

Like I said, I start my very first semester of nursing school on Thursday and if this question comes up anytime during my two years I guess I will be more than prepared to answer it. ;)

If this was an assignment why would I want to turn in your philospohy on nursing???

Wouldn't I want to give my own opinion? I have plenty of thoughts and opinions on my own beliefs, I don't need to borrow anyone else's. I'm not trying to be rude, but I'm not cheating.

Thanks to those of you who will answer. If not, that's okay too.

:)

A lot of people come here to allnurses and ask us to do their homework for them. They get an assignment ... then come here pretending that it is their own personal question. They copy down our answers and hand them in. Experienced allnurses members get a little angry at being lied to and being exploited by students in this fashion. So, many of us insist that the student do a little work and invest some thought in the question/answer before we will comment. We'll comment on someone's work, but we won't do their homework for them.

If these questions truly were 100% yours, I am sorry that your feelings got hurt -- and I hope you can understand where the posters were coming from.

As far as feeling the need to "come up with a good question for allnurses...." you don't have to start threads to be an active, valued, contributing member here. I've been here for years -- and I think I have started only 2 or 3 threads the whole time.

to answer your questions, why would you want/need our opinions, if you allegedly have been working on this for a month?

and why are you doing this paper, if school hasn't started?

(i'll go back and reread this thread, and do apologize if i overlooked the answer)

still, this IS the type of assignments that are typically distrubuted when school starts.

i remember i had a paper r/t how you see yourself as a nurses.

call me skeptical.

I got offended for you. I understand if you were trying to get answers to a problem that only you could figure out but a lot of my assignments in Intro to Nursing is to interview other nurses and ask questions similiar to yours. People shouldn't jump the gun and assume someone is trying to cheat unless it is a specific question that you couldn't figure out on your own. I also don't see anything wrong with throwing a practice question out there since NCLEX questions are applied learning questions...sometimes discussing various ways to approach a question, can help a student hone their NCLEX skills and apply those skills when they take the actual test.

If that was the case, then why are some of the questions aimed at someone that is already a nurse. How can you have a philosophy of nursing or an approach to nursing as a brand new nursing student just getting ready to start.

My philosophy stays the same, homework assignment nor not. :lol2:

I used to have your philosophy years ago, which is a good one, but now I'm happy if I can live my own by the end of the shift.

My Philosophy - Treat all my patients the same way I would want to be treated or want my family members treated. I try to think of things that they might like but are unable to ask for it or are maybe too scared to for some reason. I try to brush the ones off that are rude and not take it home with me, just get done what I need to do and remain professional. I keep all of that in mind while I try my darndest to NOT kill anyone or make any med errors. Prior to ANYTHING I do, I check, check, and then check it one more time. Always take the time to CHECK. Keep me a drug book handy and look up a medicine I am not familar with before giving it. Feel 100% confident before doing something, if your not - look it up - ask someone. I dont know how long its took me and I dont know of anything specific that has influenced me. The only advice I have is DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT.

Hello, Skeptical! (Sorry, had to)

Okay, where did I say I had been working on this for a month? I never said this was for a paper either. Geez.

You know, I have been counting down the days until August 18th since I got my acceptance letter in April. I start August 18th at 8 a.m! This is ridiculous! Please, go back and re-read because you are either confusing me with another poster, or you are just not thoroughly reading my posts. Did you read anything I wrote, or just responses from others?

If this question does come up when I start school, then good for me for thinking ahead.

I've been working as a CNA for a month. I have been watching other nurses and CNA's I work with and it seems like a lot of them don't really have any kind of philosophy for what they are doing. They just come to work, get through a shift and go home. It made me think on what mine would be and forgive me for wondering what those of you who are already RN's think as well. I look up to all of the RN's on here and I didn't think twice when posting my questions for you. Well, obviously I should have and I will next time.

If that was the case, then why are some of the questions aimed at someone that is already a nurse. How can you have a philosophy of nursing or an approach to nursing as a brand new nursing student just getting ready to start.

1. i'm telling you, op did not write those questions herself.:twocents:

also, she's asking us because she was inspired by her philosophy class? (hmmmm)

2. this type of assignment is so predictable when school starts. And, last yr's student could have given copy of assignment.

i've known that to happen as well...quite frequently, unfortunately.

when my gut is whammed like it was, i stay with it.

if i'm wrong, i'm wrong.

but i've learned to finally trust my instincts, and it doesn't feel right.

and, it's normal for an instructor to hear/read, how you see yourself in beginning.

i do believe i'm done here.

op, good luck in school.

Like I said, I am working as a CNA in a hospital around RN's and since I am getting ready to start NS, it was on my mind. Maybe I think too much. I have been thinking about what my philosophy would be since I decided to begin a career in nursing. Isn't that only natural when you choose a career? Teachers think about what theirs would be, lawyers, doctors, etc. Don't you think it's a good question to ask yourself? Even your philosophy on life in general?

I don't need to be accepted into NS or already a student nurse or even a RN to already be thinking on how I feel about nursing.

That's fine.

You are exactly the type of person I wouldn't want to know their philosophy on nursing or life anyways. Not trying to be harsh, but you seem like you already have your mind made up about me.

If anyone has half a brain they could come up with those questions.

By the way, I did have Philosophical Issues last semester and had the highest grade in the class. It makes you think. No, it isn't required for a ADN, but neither are a lot of other classes I took. I took them because they interest me.

Have a good day.
