Atheist or Agnostic?

Published

I know, I know, you're never supposed to talk about religion or politics, right....

I'm really not trying to start a religious debate, but just get a sense of where people are at. I'm a first year student and an atheist, yet all my fellow students and the nurses I'm meeting are believers.

If and when I become an atheist nurse, am I going to find myself a fish out of water?

In this country true athesists are a fish out of water, so to speak. It's no different in the nursing world, and this should not surprise the athesist nor make him anymore or less uncomfortable than in interactions in our primarily Christian society.

Good discussion so far about nursing with minority beliefs, and I've nothing further to add. :)

Completely agree. The clip was from a TV show and was not in any way, shape or form a patient scenario. For someone to make a broad generalization about me personally, such as "God pity your patients", really rubbed me the wrong way and I felt it was uncalled for. Perhaps the OP should have stated his intentions when he posted the link, as I thought it was posted as a joke, but obviously others did not. OTOH, some nurses do have a somewhat twisted sense of humor, but that is just how they cope with difficult situations....that doesn't mean that they don't provide the absolute best care possible to their patients. To each his own I guess. Once again, no hard feelings.....

Well, was it a clip of a real event though? Or were those folks, even the little girl, just actors? That would make a difference - although sometimes I question the use of little kids in scary situations in movies.

Some of us with crazy families get our feelings hurt when folks laugh at us. ;) ;)

That woman, if you take away the religious references, was just too close to my childhood for me.

That was from an episode of Wife Swap.

If you hadn't seen the episode it would be easy to assume that the clip was meant to be funny. I mean, that woman is beyond belief. Well, you know what I mean.

No, I'm not a psych nurse, I am an ICU nurse who is currently in CRNA school. I was assuming that the person who posted the clip meant it as a joke. Lord help someone if they actually laughed at it b/c that OBVIOUSLY means that they can't care for their patients b/c they're too busy making fun of all of them. But at the very least I'm glad that we have clairvoyant nurses like yourself out there who knows exactly how I would react if I had a patient similar to that lady. I bet you could save the health care system a ton of money by predicting the outcomes of patients before they're admitted to the hospital.....:angryfire

No hard feelings.....;)

no hard feelings at all.

i didn't see anything humorous in that scene.

God help me, I tried real hard not to laugh but at the end laughed. But that was just one of the emotions I felt. I also felt anger, pity and fear and did feel bad for the victims of her wrath and those who have to live with her. But, I really don't know the context and it isn't fair to either laugh or feel anything without knowing the whole story.

I will not allow anyone to judge me for my feelings, but feel free to do so. I will not own them.

Than it was real . ... not actors. That little girl still haunts me then.
