ASU Summer 2010 Program Applicants

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hello, everyone!

I submitted my application for the accelerated Summer 2010 program at ASU awhile ago, but I just realized that the February 1st deadline was coming up and wanted to see if anyone else here on allnurses.com applied or is applying. I'm so nervous, I've already applied once and didn't make it--I really, really, really, REALLY hope I can get in this time. :uhoh3:

I'm already starting to get impatient waiting for April!!! My whole life is on hold until then! I hate that I can't apply to any other schools because I'm stuck waiting for ASU and I don't want to pay a bunch of application fees if I make it into ASU regardless. :( Don't get me wrong, though, I really want to get into ASU's program. I just want to get into nursing, really. It's just a little annoying that we will find out about getting into the program so late in the year :banghead:.

Regardless, GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! :heartbeat

What scores are you all applying with?

OMG.... Pharmacology, Chapter 1.... I can't believe I just read this in a text book! HAHAH! :rotfl:

"And, despite what some gentlemen (and gentlewomen) might think, sildenafil [Viagra] would be more curse than blessing if it produced a perpetual gallant salute."

So apparently 4 chapters is really only like 35 pages. Actually will get them all read tonight! Doing my reading on Evolve, but I think I'm a little too highlighter crazy. Need to bring it down a level.

And fire, I was wondering because there was a girl with your same name in my group. Didn't know if it was you or not! Guess not lol.

sorry to hear all of your classes are in the same room! i hope it's at least a good room.

Yeahh... I felt pretty much the same. I was practically in tears, to be completely honest. But the clinical director (I don't want to say her name because I don't think I can, but she's pretty awesome!) said it best today: take it one day at a time. I couldn't stop looking at the schedule yesterday and I felt SO lost, helpless and OVERWHELMED! I had to just stop trying to organize our calendar altogether. I couldn't look at it anymore without feeling panicked lol.

Today was a LOT better, though. We met our FOR's and did little get-to-know-you stuff within our LC's and did the lab tours. It was a completely different environment today, though, because the FOR's (or at least mine) were VERY supportive and were very encouraging, letting us know that they're going to help us as much as possible, etc. etc. I think the difference is that NUR 320 is pass/fail whereas all of our other classes have a LOT more pressure on them to not only do well, but we have to do VERY well in order to get A's and I am not used to that at all. There's a LOT more pressure to perform in our lecture classes versus lab, and that initial perception scared the heck out of me!!

I'm better now, though. Touring the labs made me feel more at home--like it related more to what I want to be doing in the future, you know? I just need to take it one day at a time. Or, like at the end of the clinical director's PowerPoint: "Keep stepping."

The "keep stepping" lady is possibly one of the nicest people I've had as an instructor. you guys are really lucky to have her. the schedule is overwhelming. looking at it a week at a time is the best. all the words start blending together. the best part is crossing things off that you've done though haha. i for one loved the calendar because it saved me the trouble of making my own.

and even if 320 is pass/fail, you'll find that you unconsciously try just as hard (if not harder) for lab and clinicals as you do for lecture grades. the effort pays off not in grades but in making things way easier once you feel comfortable in your skills and assessments.

Hahha that's an awesome term! Whats funny is about 2 weeks ago I was discussing this exact reaction to this exact drug with my girl while researching various therapeutic medications for dogs; this being one of them. How ironic.

"This unusual side effect, which affects both males and females, may be considered adverse or beneficial, depending on your view of such things."

LMAO

hahahaha, I KNOW! I am LOVING the Pharm book so far!!! It's making it quite easy to read! :yeah: I'm liking it!!

As for 320 being pass/fail, I actually think I'll unconsciously be working harder in that class regardless. Not to put any of the other classes down or anything, but the labs seem much more important and I know that I NEED to get the lab stuff down so that I am comfortable and confident in my nursing skills. I mean no matter how well I might get the book knowledge down, if I suck at the one-on-one stuff we learn in lab, then I'm no use as a nurse. There's just something about it that makes me look forward to the labs so much. Part of it might be that extra pressure that I personally feel from the lecture classes to excel in order to get an A, but that might just be me. I've never had such serious, strict lecture classes before, not even Patho was that bad :uhoh3:. But yeah, they gave us that "master calendar" haha. It's pretty daunting--and then I realized that they didn't include several of our assignments! haha. I have a large desk calendar that I use that is color-coded and everything and I still haven't worked up the nerve to fill everything out on it. I just don't want to think about it! :uhoh3: haha

Does "Keep Stepping" teach/coordinate in the other blocks, or is she mostly Jr 1? Do you guys know?

Hi All -

I think that the first day was overwhelming for all of us. I LOVED today though. However, I still feel really unorganized - so I'll have to work on that over the next few days. The problem with feeling like that for me is that I have a hard time concentrating on what I'm doing unless I know that I have everything else together. I'm so happy the the College of Nursing has such great faculty & staff! It really makes up for inadequacies at everywhere-else-ASU! It was SO great to be able to get to know everyone a little bit!

Also, it looks like Prop 100 passed... so hopefully we wont have huge increases in tuition over the next few semesters - and more importantly so many people will not lose their jobs! YAY!

Get to work!

-A :)

I am totally the same way! I tried to buy a calendar/agenda from wal-mart today and right before I was about to pay I realized it started from JULY 2010-JULY 2011! I went back to get the right one and ALL of them were like that. LOL I guess I am going to have to make my own/use the master list to help make my own. Yay for PROP 100 :yeah: I was really worried there for a bit.

We are almost halfway through our first week of nursing school! Wooohoooo :D

OH! I have a question for the Jr. 2's about Pharmacology!!

How in the world did you guys study for your first Pharm test?! We had our first Pharm lecture today, and then have one next Wednesday and then we have our first EXAM the Wednesday after that! With only 2 lectures!!! I can't even begin to guess what will be on the test... it seems way too early for a test! Granted we're supposed to read like 12 chapters before next Wednesday... yikes! I'll be reading all weekend lol. Is that how most of our classes are: that we're going to have to glean a large majority of the information for exams from reading?

Well you have a lot of different teachers than we had so I dont want to say for sure, but most test questions came from the power points. Like I've said before, I barely read at all, there were several text books that I didn't even open lol.

Im not sure if you have the same pharm teacher, if you have J.A. (dont know if i can say her name) then just concentrate on the power points. For pharm definitely start to prepare for exams several days in advance, you cant possibly cram all that info in the day before the exam! The first exam for us didn't have any info on actual drugs yet, it was more general info like how drugs work, different receptor types, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, etc. Its kinda funny because by the time you get to the final and you're reviewing stuff from the first test you'll think, wow this stuff is so easy now. :p You all handled patho so ya'll can handle pharm!

It does feel like it has been a LOT longer!! The days or slow, but hopefully the weeks go quick. It is crazy how close knit we all are becoming so quick, but I guess that comes from being together in every class for hours on end lol

That is something I am really liking about our class, getting along so quickly. I guess hours upon hours of torture do that to people! :rotfl:

Hey everyone, on the Communication Across the Lifespan video worksheet, did yall hear anything answering the following questions!?!?!?!

3. Why should expressions like ‘off the wall’, ‘flew the coop’, ‘broke the bank’ and ‘raining cats and dogs’ be avoided with preschoolers?

10. What physical limitations may impede communication with the elderly client? Describe interventions that could be used.

11. Name a nonverbal communication technique that is very important to the elderly client. Discuss the benefits of its use.

We were able to answer the 1st part of question 10, but heard nothing of the interventions. Also on #8, didn't really hear any rational for the 2 things mentioned for therapeutic communication with adolescents. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :) Thanks
