ASU Summer 2010 Program Applicants

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hello, everyone!

I submitted my application for the accelerated Summer 2010 program at ASU awhile ago, but I just realized that the February 1st deadline was coming up and wanted to see if anyone else here on allnurses.com applied or is applying. I'm so nervous, I've already applied once and didn't make it--I really, really, really, REALLY hope I can get in this time. :uhoh3:

I'm already starting to get impatient waiting for April!!! My whole life is on hold until then! I hate that I can't apply to any other schools because I'm stuck waiting for ASU and I don't want to pay a bunch of application fees if I make it into ASU regardless. :( Don't get me wrong, though, I really want to get into ASU's program. I just want to get into nursing, really. It's just a little annoying that we will find out about getting into the program so late in the year :banghead:.

Regardless, GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! :heartbeat

What scores are you all applying with?

First of all, I would like to say congratulations on getting in to ASU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Welcome to a wonderful journey! As a senior in the nursing program in ASU, I can honestly say that you do not need to study before school starts. The best thing for you to do is to relax and spend time with your family and friends. Have some fun because once school starts, your social life is pretty much non-existent. I live on the Gilbert/Queen Creek border, and I have never been sent to the west side for clinicals. Learning communities change every semester, which you will come to find is a GOOD thing. I know you all have orientation this Friday. Think about getting involved. CCNS is an awesome organization, looks great on resumes, and does not take up a lot of outside time. Remember to take care of yourself during school. Eat right, and get a good night's sleep, especially before a test. Make sure you have a good support system. You will need it. Nursing school needs to be your priority. You will literally eat, sleep, and breathe it for the next 4 semesters. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :nurse::)

Thank you ashdawg! :) You have just put all my worries :uhoh3: at ease and now I feel h:lol2: ppy that I can finally enjoy my time before the program starts. I, too, like many have been trying to cram as much studying as I can even though I really don't know what to study lol but at least now I can just relax and not worry about it so much. Thank you for all your advise! It is truly appreciated, especially coming from a senior in the program. By the way, what is the CCNS? Are there any nursing scholarships that you have found while you are in the program? My biggest worry is how I'm going to pay through school, especially with financial aid being so late at this point. I have heard that PVCC has a clinical scholarship in which a nursing student can use the hours they have put into clinical and those hours will determine how much of the scholarship will be awarded to the student.

As for uniforms, I am a fairly petite person and I heard that the uniforms ASU provides come fairly big on sizes (even their extra smalls). Does anyone know if they shrink or knows where to find small pant sizes? I know that I cannot avoid the top due to the embroidery but I would like to at least get my hands on some pants that will actually fit.

Thanks again and see you all in (3) DAYS :yeah:

I've been meaning to ask this as well... I've been frantically trying to squeeze in Patho studying with my other classes this semester but it hasn't been going very well as of late. I'm very relieved to hear that the teachers review info, that makes me feel much more at ease that I don't have to magically re-absorb the Patho book again haha.

I was curious, though, tttt and Tarabara, about how they pick the clinical groups. Do you guys know? Like is it just alphabetically or random selection? I was just pondering that the other day... haha :lol2:

4 days! :heartbeat

Honestly, you don't need to review anything. If you had to review anything, it'd definitely be A&P (cardiac/respiratory) and pathophysiology. I had two full semesters of patho here at ASU and its helped just a little bit so far, but I can see the background really helping in adult health.

For J1, the clinical sites are kind of organised by people's proximity to each other to facilitate the natural formation of carpools. J2 is more "random" but they try to keep smaller carpools together.

A friend of mine that started this spring posted that summer tuition is $7800?? That's crazy if that's the case.

Im assuming your information will be the same as ours was, so Apparel Pro will be there with uniforms to purchase that day. They only bring 1-2 styles of pants with them, but if you actually go into the Apparel Pro store they have many different styles of pants so maybe you can find one there thats smaller and fits you better. It doesn't really matter what style, as long as they're white! :lol2:

Thanks for the info on the clinical sites, everyone! It's so great to hear from students that are actually in the program :) Sorry if I'm asking too many questions, but I was also curious about the actual class formats; especially pertaining to taking notes. Do a lot of students use laptops to take notes, or is it more common to use the "old fashioned" paper and pencil? Like will the profs put notes, PowerPoints, etc. online? I was just curious if I should buy new binders and whatnot or if I should just keep to my laptop :)

What is the CCNS? Are there any nursing scholarships that you have found while you are in the program?

CCNS is the College Council of Nursing Students--it's a student organization that does some volunteer work, has a mentor program and also puts little get-togethers together and does thank-you stuff for professors and whatnot. I'm actually hoping to run for one of the Class Rep positions for our cohort! :D CCNS will have a presentation at the meeting on Friday to introduce the organization and whatnot :) I do believe that they have scholarships you can apply for, and they are in contact with a lot of organizations and update the general nursing student body about scholarships offered through some organizations.

I sincerely hope not!!! Yikes!!!!:crying2:

That's a good idea! I was actually going to opt out on driving all the way to Tempe but you have a great point and I think I am going to go sometime tomorrow and check it out for myself. I also talked to my aunt who is a nurse and for those that are looking for places for scrubs, the JcPenny's outlet store at Arizona Mills in Tempe has a great collection, I guess, that run in all kinds of styles, sizes, and colors.

Thanks girl! That sounds interesting and kinda like student council but for nursing hehe and you know how I am with anything Stu. Co. :lol2:!!! This is maybe something I would enjoy and I could totally see the two of us tagg-teaming it up.:yeah:Hehehe. Can't wait for the meeting and to see each and everyone one of you guys!

(2) days and counting :nurse:

don't worry about the questions. i totally understand how much you want to know about what you're getting yourself in to.

Almost everyone does their notes on their laptops. Personally, it changes per class. For theory, I don't actually take notes. Everything is on powerpoints and most of the information (i feel) can be gleaned from lecture. Pharmacology on the other hand goes at a pretty decent clip, but I write out all of my notes for this class by hand. professional development? i take most of my notes on facebook.

once you get blackboards set up, you will be astounded at how organized all of the assignments are. by week, classes have their materials posted. there are lecture notes (powerpoints, mostly), additional resources, and downloadable handouts when needed, organized by week. Most of the teachers prefer to deal with files rather than paper.

You will get a lot of paper, though. and you will be printing a lot. a LOT. a binder is nice.

also, i agree with tarabara. if you can find something that fits you better outside, do it. the same goes for price and comfort. just get white pants from somewhere.

hahaha so true! That class is just facebook time :p

I agree with tttt, ask as many questions as you want, I wish I had found a great place like this to ask questions before I started :)

I used to always write notes hand written because it helped me remember them better if I saw them in my handwriting, however I've completely changed that now. For 310 and 394/312 there is always a PowerPoint and its so easy just to write any additional notes into the PowerPoint. They dont really require that many extra notes because they're pretty straight forward. I tried to hand write notes for pharm the first few weeks and i just couldn't do it because she lectures very quickly. And ya tttt was right, you'll be getting and printing a LOT of papers. My binders only purpose is to hold all the papers we get lol. I also agree that they are extremely well organized, all of your lecture PowerPoints, handouts, assignments, etc are organized by week and very easy to find, which is very helpful for me!

Ahh, you guys are wonderful, thank you! :bowingpur:yeah:

I definitely LOL'd about the Professional Development and Facebook time... good to know! :p Thanks for all the information, though. I think I'll stick with the binders I have for now--I don't really *need* new ones yet--and just prep my good ol' laptop to be lugged back and forth from school. :) Do you have to pay to print stuff out at ASU? Isn't it like .05 cents a page or something? I don't remember, I've never had/used money on my Sun Card or printed anything from the computer commons. I'm leery of having to print a whole bunch of stuff on my printer though, it may not last much longer! haha. I'm glad to hear that everything is well organized... I'm sure it would have to be or we would go more crazy than we already are going to be!

2 days 'til the meeting! :heartbeat

We should have like a code-name for this thread... like someone should call out "BANANA!" and then we can all meet and introduce ourselves as the allnurses.com ASU thread people... haha! jk jk :jester:

Woo hoo! That sounds like fun! I just can't wait to get involved. I've felt so student-organization deprived since coming to ASU last year haha. They just don't seem to have much going on Downtown; either that or I somehow ALWAYS seem to miss all the events! :( Regardless, sounds like fun! I talked to the President and she said there should be 5 open positions for Class Rep! That's a lotta Class Reps! haha

I agree. When I went to UA it seemed there were so many more club opportunities (I was in 4). It will be exciting to get involved in student organizations again.
