artifical nails off..angry nurse

Nurses Safety

Published

Hi Everyone..i found this site looking for information on artifical nails and nurses. So,iam a brand new member.

I do home health and have had artifical nails on for 18yrs .Dec.30th i was told i was to take them off...so i contacted a nail tech and told her my situation and she (as well as one other salon) told me they were putting a gel(like a hard nail polish) over many of the nurses who had to take their nails off....so this is what i did.

On Jan.11th while talking to one of my supervisors about some paperwork,,i was reminded i had to take my nails off,,i said these are my own nails with a gel hardner over my nails..she said she would have to check that out...i tried to also with infection control but they never called me back.

When i returned to work 2 days later,,instead of telling me what they found out,i was written up,and told i could not work that day and was sent home.Iam very angry :angryfire

I took the gel off,and now my nails are sore ,hands look ugly,i cant peel an orange,scratch..nothing.Iam feeling very helpless and down.

Has anyone else experienced this when taking off their nails and how did you handle it? Are we not able to even have a gel temporarily over our thin weakened nails,,till the new stronger nails appears?

Please help as iam writing a rebuttal to this written warning. Thanks

Please go to fingernailcare.com they sell great stuff to get your nails back to normal after the fakes comes off. they also have a great forum with lots of ideas for help. my sis uses the stuff and loves it. i too am going to try it since i am a long time acrylic wearer. I find it funny that my Nursing instructor (who also heads the department) wears acrylics, and so do more than half of the nurses and aides on my floor for clinicals. now students were told no fakes, short nails and only light colored polish, (no blues, greens or wild colors, think pale pinks and beiges) fine for me since i always have a french manicure. thought it was funny on friday got yelled for wearing the barbell on my tongue by a nurse with fakes. makes it hard for the students that have worn them for years without porblems when you still see nurses wearing them.

I am sorry, but a barbell in your tongue is NOT a good representation for a nurse!

My agency says no visible piercings and tattoos have to be covered by the uniform/clothing. I told one aide with a barbell to be careful who she showed it to, she could get into hot water. I did ask her what it was like to get one put in.......out of curiousity. I dont even have pierced ears, I cant imagine piercing some of the places people pierce nowadays LOL. My Dh told me a guy at work had his scrotum pierced wiith a ring in it OWWWW. :rotfl:

I consider a tongue piecing a visual piercing. So does my employer.

I guess unless his scrotum's hanging out of his scrubs/uniform, it's not my concern lol.

(At the rate we're going for what people get away with wearing to work, i wouldn't rule out the incidence of such an event.)

I agree.

And i have yet to see someone who doesn't talk with a lisp as a result of it. When they talk, you see it.

It amazes me at work how ticked off pts. get when anesthesia tell them the tongue ring has to come out. Nevermind the alternative is the ET tube snagging the ring, taking the ring out and shoving it down the trachea!

Off subject, but how do they go about piercing a tongue.? Ouch!

A large-guage needle and a cork from what i've seen on TV. I'd be afraid of chipping a TOOTH with unnecessary metal in my mouth.

You can get tongue barbells in clear (or colored) plastic. They don't stand out as much unless they person is one of those people that constantly "play" with it and it's really visible.

Yikes!! I forgot to post that i FORGOT to put in the plastic retainer. geez people give me break. i have tattoos also. anything to say about that. remember nurses are regular human beings as well and gasp... we have lives outside of work. i just thought it was funny that she yelled at me for that and she had super long, bright red fakes. and too Marie_LPN I don't speak any differently than I used to. people that get speech issues and chipped teeth are because after the piercing is healed they do not switch out the barbells for a shorter one. mine is fitted to my tongue it does not move up and down when i talk. and if i tried to play with it i would have to stick my tongue half way out of my mouth. Very few people know that I have unless i show it to them. The only reason she seen is because I yawned and didn't have my mouth totally closed when i took my hand away. when she said something to my instructor she hadn't even realized that i had one. so can we put out the flames for now???

I see opinions here, haven't seen flames.

I just have to know, what is the purpose of tongue piercing?

And what is the purpose of splitting the tongue to resemble that of a serpent?

Aside from it being culturally reprehensible in the US, what is the motivator to do this?

Well, I am just wondering WHY people would want their tongue pierced?

I'm just curious.

I do get my hair frosted, but I do it to cover up my gray, and people tell me I look too young otherwise to be totally gray, so for now I'm doing some frost in my hair.

Somehow I don't think that is quite the same as a tongue or belly piercing.

I also have my ears pierced and I wear some jewelry, ie: earrings, rings on my hands,

but those aren't things I do and then coverup. Maybe a necklace with a simple cross on it, or something like that.

I still don't think those things are in the same class as tongue or belly piercings.

Seems when a person gets something like that, it's for attention, but why get it if you cover it up or only want a few people to know about it?

What is the purpose of it?
