Death is part of the life cycle. How can you consider nursing if you're afraid of it. I've seen an autopsy and it was so amazing. Pictures in a book don't convey the message as much as actually holding a human heart in your hand instead of looking at a picture.
I'm considering Nursing cuz it runs in my family. I'm scared cuz of spiritual reasons. Spirit seems to find and follow me which makes me scared.

No, not at all. I was considering going into forensics until I realized there is zero job market for that here.

I don't really know what that means... but, you can make a great impact at the start (L&D) or the end of a life (that could be in many places...). You can hold the hand of a man who has no family and just suffered a massive hemorraghic stroke. After he vomits on you and says "I'm sorry" to lose consciousness and know those were his last words and that no one was there to hold his hand while he was extubated and wait for his heart to stop. You can hold that hand so he's not alone. You will be proud of yourself, to be available during a fleeting moment that could have a massive impact on that person's soul. I'm not spiritual, per se, but I have seen some crazy and amazing things and know what I know (if you know what I mean). I think it's special to be there and comfort someone (or their family) as they pass on. Try to look at it that way, rather than the gruesome or morbid (though it's hard sometimes.)
150% Totally agree with MassED. By the way Massed; Where in Mass.? I lived in Revere, Weymouth, worked in Quincy and at Government Center in Boston. Got an Uncle in Peabody & a sister in Manchester (that just returned home cause she flew down here to Fla. to attend my graduation ceremony).
Live in Hull - work at SS hospital in Weymouth... you live in Fl now? What program did you graduate from?

I don't agree that you can't be afraid of death/dead people and be in nursing. Yes, I was afraid of dead people. They still make me nervous, and I hate it when they make weird noises (air escaping from lungs), but I'm not scared of them any more, per say. Since I've been a nurse I haven't seen anyone actually die in front of me. I did have one die when I was an EMT, but that was over ten years ago. I'm not sure where we are going after this (if we are going anywhere at all), so I guess that adds to my unease with death and dying. I have gotten better about it since working for hospice.

i'm not afraid of the dead people .. it's the living you have to fear.... the dead people can't hurt you... and they make the best patients... no requests, no call light ringing... no compliants about dinner and how over or under cooked it is.... lol
Thank you everyone... it really helped me understand a lot. Anyways, We had a grumpy:angryfire neighbor who died not long ago. He was such a complicated person so all of us kinda avoided him. Not realizing that he had been dead in his flat for about a week. It started getting so smelly (it was so awful) and we were like wondering where it came from. I'm pretty sure that's what got me exersized about dead people. I guess it was just sad:sniff: that he had no close family around when ha passed away.
