Are you a pansy, or a rose?

Dog-gone it... I'm a pansy! But I hate being a pansy!

What are you? Are you a rose, a bird of paradise, or maybe an orchid?

Or are you, like me, more easily described as a pansy, a weed, or an expensive ornamental grass?

As a nurse, patients deserve the strong, sure type... certainly!

Patients deserve a strong and graceful rose, not a pansy who might wilt at the first sign of uncertainty or trouble.

I've been told that shyness (or even reservedness) is good and well as a child, but a shame in adulthood.

Can I ever earn respect from patient or co-worker if I don't become a more dignified, confident nurse.

Are assertiveness classes in order?

Roses, orchids, ever sure sunflowers, throw seeds of wisdom my way!

Truthfully, a little over the top on the flower thing? Maybe?

well ok

it may well be over the top with the flower thing but here goes.

young nurses especially most students are pansies (as are some new instructors)

but when the pansies wilt in the heat what comes in their place- we often plant impatience because we want it now!

impatience would be your new though not so green nurse that thinks they know all / has all / and is all.....know the type.

if impatience isn't watered regular they look ugly and faded and the gardeners dig them up and plant something that will be beautiful no matter what the weather .....like a Hosta Lilly

they grow in shade, or sun, will tolerate drought but like water

Hostas are the nurses that have been there and done that. they are not old, yet, but are too old to be green. their roots are firmly planted in good soil and they bloom purple they don't just bloom for a season they come back year after year looking more beautiful with each passing year.......a seasoned nurse that knows their stuff, that is willing to teach a new nurse for the sake of sharing nursing knowledge, and are less likely to judge a new staff member, unless you break one of nursings 10 commandments................................

An Evergreen is probably the best plant for an older nurse.

sturdy, solid, never changing but good for so many things you need them. Roses that smell good have prickly thorns.............

I'm probably a Hosta Lilly

I tend to be shy as well...but learned quickly to be confident as a nurse. When doing substance abuse...sitting in on a group session I overhead a statement...I don't remember it word for word..but basically that shyness is a self centered personality trait. I'm not putting down anyone who is shy..but for me..it made me realize when I'm being shy..it's because I'm self concious..and at that point I'm thinking more of myself than of the patient...family....or whoever I am dealing with at the time.

So..as hard as it is....I just walk into the room and put on my nursing face for the patient.
