I live upstate. I have two small children and work full time. I want a career change. All the community colleges in my area are 1-2 year waits for the RN program. Who has the time. I have taken all the pre-reqs. Are there any schools that are not wait listed?!

Hello
I am from New York also . To answer your question , from what I am hearing the majority of NYS and NYC schools, such as the community colleges and a few university do have waiting list.
In my case, I applied to the University of Buffalo( and was accpeted)because I believe they have an excellent nursing program, but I was told that they have waiting list about one year or so for transfer students.
I dont know if all the SUNY schools have wait a list for there RN program, but I do know that where I live in NYC, (Bronx) many of the schools are 2-3 years wait.
I have decided that a private school would be a better shot for me because it is just crazy to have to wait so long just to begin a nursing program. In my opinion i find it very helpful if you make an appointment with whichever nursing school your interested in nursing department and have them work with you to see what your chances are . Its better than just applying to school and waiting to see if you get in . schools in general get many application for admission and I am sure if you were to meet with someone it would be beneficial to
I hope I could help

Hi Jenny C.
There's no wait list at my C.C. here in Buffalo - ECC (Erie Community College, a.k.a. "Everyone Can Come", a.k.a. "Easy Credit College" - take your pick). They have two campuses that have the ADN program - City (starts in Jan.) and North (starts in Sept.). It's too late to apply for the Sept. start, but not for Jan. Check them out at http://www.ecc.edu . Also, I've heard that N.C.C.C. (Niagara Christian [?] Community College) does not have a waiting list.
I've only heard good things about U.B. (U. of Buffalo, above) too. Good luck with your search.
Thanks for the info. I will look into those and keep trying!

The CUNY(City University of NY) schools really don't have wait list, but there is a cut off GPA for each semester to enter the nursing program. If your GPA isn't high enough then you must re-apply next semester. So your not being put on a wait list automatically. It's a matter or getting a near perfect GPA in your pre-req's (3.8-4.0). The SUNY (State University of NY) schools usually have BSN programs, so the admission to the nursing schools is somewhat different than CUNY. Good Luck!

Some schools are also adding sections due to demand. I heard a rumor that my college (Jamestown Community College) is accepting an additional 20-some students for this fall. If are on a wait list, then you might want to look into this possibility for the school/s/ you applied to. If I hadn't been accepted right away, I had considered becoming an LPN first and then transferring into the 2nd year of the ADN program.
Do you have a degree in another field? If so, you might want to look into accelerated BSN programs (another thing I had considered)

I am completely offended by you calling ecc "easy credit college". I thought the program was challenging, 75% of my class failed level 3. I passed and also passed my boards within 75 questions. What level are you? I kmow that ecc has that rep but the nursing program is entirely different.
Hi bstrongrn,
No offense intended. I'm just parroting what I've heard other folks call it. I'm not originally from this area so I had no idea about the nick names. A lot of times when I tell people where I go to school, they come back with "Oh, Easy Credit College" . I'm laughing at myself more than anything :chair: . Take heart - I don't believe that the nursing program at ECC or any college is easy.
I know it's tough going on when so many of your peers are left behind - I am facing that now.
I see this is your first post. Welcome to allnurses!!!
Have a great week!!!

My alma mater I don't believe has a waiting list, at least I haven't heard that it does. SUNY Morrisville...it has a good program too.

I live in Corning NY and I believe our college does not have a waiting list. The program is INTENSE and vary time consuming, but well worth it. I missed passing last year by .04 points with a cut-off of 75%.(Ihad a 74.6%) So, after petitioning to get back in and waiting to see if there was a spot, about 20 or so students were allowed to re-register. Good Luck.

Try SUNYACC (Adirondack Community College). There is not a wait list, rather an "interview" that will determine your acceptance into the program. That being said, you need to have darn good grades to get in. -I had a 3.8 at the time of my interview. Good Luck!!
