Are nurses actually people too???

Published

So i graduated school last month, took the boards last friday, and found out yesterday that I passed. OMG. I'm still in shock/denial/ecstasy/totally overwhelmed.

But over the past 24 hours I have found that I keep having this crazy monologue in my head about what i can and can't do now that i'm a nurse.

I need new scrubs... I'm a nurse.

I have to lose weight... I'm a nurse.

I need to get a better routine in the morning... nurses have it all together.

I need to get my finances in order.... because I'm a nurse now and that's what nurses do....

hahaha. It seems that I have wanted to be a nurse for SO LONG- about 15 years to be exact, that it has also morphed into a huge all encompassing life goal for me. YES these are things to work toward of course, but I don't know why I've rolled BEING A NURSE into HAVING MY LIFE TOGETHER.

Please tell me that you're not all perfect people who get up early to watch the sunrise, slowly sip your coffee, never oversleep, have all your finances in order, and are the perfect weight! :)

Ok. We're not. I am dreadfully overweight, stay in bed reading the paper and doing email until noon sometimes, and spend way too much time on AN. I keep looking at my wallpaper where it's peeling and thinking, "Geez, I gotta fix that." I haven't seen the actual top of my desk in months, maybe years.

That make you feel better?

Welcome to being a grownup. It may or may not get better, but life will go on! Have fun with it!

Hahaha! I wake up 15 minutes before I have to run out the door to drive to work. I guzzle my morning hit of caffeine during the 10 minute drive. Oversleep? Yep, done that. And I don't bother setting an alarm on the weekends unless I have to get up in time to do something. Perfect weight? Sure, if I were several feet taller!

Nurses are human and are prone to the same flaws that all humans are prone to. It seems that fact is often forgotten.

Specializes in Gerontology.

I drink too much.

i spent last Saturday doing absolutely nothing. Sometimes I have potato chips and dip for supper.

don't try to be perfect.

I'm in my recliner binge watching Schitt's Creek- having eaten Oreos and popcorn for lunch.

And it's taken me 39 years to get to this point.

LOL loving these responses. thank you!!!

Well, yes, you probably do. But that's only because it's kind of silly to wear your school uniform when you're a nurse. And when you've just graduated and starting out, buying new scrubs is part of the fun.

I have to lose weight... I'm a nurse.

If that's the case, my job should make sure I have the time to actually sit down and eat a decent meal. Or leave work in time to get to the gym. Maybe even pay for my gym membership.

I need to get a better routine in the morning... nurses have it all together.

If by have it all together” you mean wake up in the morning with just enough time to shower, throw my hair up, get my daughter dressed (while leaving her dirty clothes on the floor), hand her some Eggo waffles (while leaving the dishes in the sink) as I push her out the door, and *usually* remember to pack her lunch” then yes, I have it all together.

I need to get my finances in order.... because I'm a nurse now and that's what nurses do....

If nurses are supposed to have their finances in order, they should have taught me that in school. I know far more about, and am far more comfortable, managing a laryngospasm than I am managing my 401K.

I relate with this SO much, you basically just described my Saturday mornings lol.

In response to the OP, enjoy this period of being a new nurse. Journal about it if you can, is fun to reflect later on. Nurses definitely do not have it all together, but if you spend some time every week doing something you love, you will have an easier time with the stresses that come with the job.

I should have added that I've been a Medical Assistant for 10 years and have a million pair of scrubs. but i feel like i need NEW scrubs. you know, NURSE scrubs. (????) I'm being ridiculous. :p

LOL - I remember feeling the same way -- back in the Dark Ages when I was a student. I was in absolute, total awe of the ICU nursing staff. I knew I would never ever make it to their exalted level.

I was lucky enough to be hired into a Neuro Trauma ICU as a new grad. I clearly remember being stunned when I came across my 3-11 Charge Nurse in the break room... smoking a cigarette (it was OK back then) WHILE she was eating , transcribing orders & finishing up some documentation ... because she actually looked a bit flustered & I had never seen her anything but calm and in control.

They were wonderful and supportive to a greener-than-grass newbie. It worked out just fine for me as I'm sure it will for OP.

No, like it was mentioned, it is fun to get your more, I guess, adult scrubs? I work in a children's hospital and wore bright, distracting colors and scrub tops as a nursing assistant. I had a lot of scrubs but I felt like I needed to look more together, more grown up. So, I promptly bought scrubs in colors that I felt were more "professional" and a bunch of fun t-shirts for all of our various themed days. The kids love my t-shirts and I vaguely look more like I know what I'm supposed to be doing. :roflmao:

Everything else is smoke and mirrors. I do need to lose weight but that's because I will be getting married in September. The other stuff? Lol, please, I work nights, I drink a beer while I'm making my bacon and hashbrowns before bed (hmmm...but I have stopped only because I'm now "sweating for the dress"). :cheeky: Granted, I do have more time for chores now. But, somehow, I suspect that will all change once the children start being born.

Specializes in CCU, SICU, CVSICU, Precepting & Teaching.

Nurses are people, too. Some of us are overweight -- some of us are obese. Some of us have too much debt, some cannot get it together in the morning (or evening, if we work nights) to save our souls and others are perfectly organized.

Congratulations on being a real nurse! You have time to work on the other stuff!
