Are med-surg jobs extremely competitive?

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Im in pretty much the worst case scenario, haha. I have two years of outpatient experience (6 months in rehab, 1.5 years in pediatrics office as an RN). From what I have been reading on here, I am basically "an old new grad". So what would be the best way to break into acute care? Are employers more willing to hire people like me to a general med-surg floor to start? Thanks!

Just start applying and get yourself out there. I worked in an outpatient clinical setting for my first year out of nursing school. When I started putting out applications for other areas I had multiple interviews within a few weeks and two job offers within six weeks. I ended up with a day position on Med-Surg and a PRN position in another field without any problems.

A lot of places, especially Med-Surg, won't really mind that you don't have the acute care experience. They will see it as a chance to train you right without having to start from the very beginning of a new grad. Good luck in your Job Search!

I agree w/ BloomNurseRN, most med-surg floors will hire new RNs and the fact that you have at least some experience will probably actually help you. I don't think you will have a problem, just start applying. :)

Correction...you are not an "old new grad" because you have been gainfully employed as a nurse the past two years. A true "old new grad" is someone who has been licensed for longer than a year and lacks any type of paid work experience as a nurse.

This is where you can really put together a very good cover letter and resume. Make sure you focus on your strengths and how what you have learned in your clinic roles will help you in the MS role. Make your resume specific to the job you are applying for, too often nurses keep the same resume and just put it out for all jobs, but what you should do is alter each one to focus on the requirements of the posted job and how you can contribute to that role and the facility based on the skills and experience you have gleaned from your previous jobs. Good luck, you should do well
