Are you forced to practice IV's and injections on each other in nursing school?

Published

Hello! I am currently taking my pre-reqs at Scottsdale Community College before the nursing program and have a few questions about the program. Im sure ALL schools are completely different, but I was curious to know when the time comes to practice inserting IV's and injections were the students forced to practice on each other? Or is it optional? I obviously dont mind administrating the IV or injection, I just have a fear of someone practicing on me. I know sounds silly!! How do they do these procedures at your schools? Better yet, if you are a student at Scottsdale Community College I'd really like to find out what to expect in the future of the program. Thanks!! :D

Yes, MANDATORY! "To fell what a patient will fell when you will be unable to catch a vein , looool.".. words from my instructor's words! And I was the model for one of my collegue, beuatifull and depressed that anyone refused her to work with. And she gave me at the first try big hematoma, that I will never forgot, loool. I used heparine ointment to be like human after her tries, lol. I remember good timee, when she practiced on my arms, and I smoked her expensive cigarettes, loool (I was soo poor at that time...no money for cigarettes, lol)

After that the most powerfull surgeon women that I ever seen, smart beuatifull and bully, loool, yelled at me at the beging of my OR carrier.... "You are not here to try, you will DO IT, NOW, or you are out of here!" I cried a lot...he, he, he. In years I said thanks to her for that lesson....In a men word, she was the best! I think that then she helped me to start to have confidence in me, scarriyng me. You need just to do it, no fear, not pressure, just do it! Even now when I start an IV, I hear her voice, "NOW or you are out of here!", looooool. Damn it she did good job with my IV skills.

We didn't. It doesn't seem to happen as much as it once did due to liability issues. Neither cc in my area allows practicing.

I think that's illegal in my state (MA). We practiced subcu injections on hot dogs, and others on injection pads. We weren't taught how start IVs, though we saw a video on it.

My school we are not allowed to practice on each other.

It happened to me during an orientation in a hospital!

We "stick" each others for a "target practice."

I almost resigned....

We did both IMs and IVs on each other (just an itty bitty 22 G catheter in the AC :D)

cheers,

They did this is on my classes and I opted not to. It was optional.

I think its against some state laws here to let us practice on each other.

I really wish it wasn't. Giving injections to pads and starting IVs on fake arms is fairly frustrating. I'd rather practice on someone who is voluntarily willing rather then the patient.

We do not do IV's on each other but we do give "shots" to each other for practice. Our instructors have told us that this will probably be going away in the future due to new legislation however.

no no no! :no::no::no:

we practiced on little pads. we also had a little forearm model that can be used to practice intradermal injections but the bleb never appeared on it.
