Are you discerning with your "likes"?

Published

It's been established many years ago that I rely on "likes" as validation of my worth as a valued member of the Allnurses.com community. As such, whenever I get a "like" notification, I go to my dashboard to see who liked what post (yeah, I told you that I have self-esteem issues).

A curious thing I've noticed is that some members will just go through and "like" every post that's on a thread they're reading. I wonder why. Are they just so enthusiastic about the subject matter that they're just all "Hell YEAH!!" to every post?

Alternatively, I will sometimes notice that a particular member will have "liked" several of my posts in several different threads on different boards within a short period of time, and I'll think, "Is Davey Do (or you know, whoever) stalking me?"

So what are you patterns and criteria for "liking" someone else's posts?

Confession time: I'm not a habitual frequenter of fora in general, and - despite the ease of AN's layout - it took me a while to realise what the whole 'like' business was about.

And by that time... I'd posted on several threads! And not 'liked' any of the comments! What's the etiquette? Do you start 'liking' now? How does that make the people on whose threads I commented, but neglected to 'like' last week feel? Does one go back and 'like' retrospectively?

It's so face-palmingly English.

Give me a flooded cave system and a SCUBA tank and I'm in like Flynn.

Present me with the prospect of a potential breach of etiquette and suddenly I'm Hugh bloody Grant.

That's exactly the angst I experience on a daily basis. I don't want to OFFEND anyone! So I'm either faced with not liking anyone, or liking everyone out of fear that I might hurt someone's feelings. I'm sure there is a therapist out there who would love to crawl into my brain. I blame the fact that I'm the youngest sibling.

This from the man who noted the PERCENTAGE of likes that Dogen and I had, as compared to him.

Is Dogen still around? I miss Dogen and his bald pate.

I don't want to make a court case out of this, Farawyn, but it was you who informed me of Dogen's like percentage.

You did so in a PM.

I wanted to see a pissing contest.

I'll admit to the crime.

He isn't around AN, but I talk to him and he is doing well!!!

And who here has not liked a comment just to make the writer confused (after they make a ridiculous statement of course, arguing with you just for the sake of arguing).

I purposely read every post and did not "like" one because now Klone has me doing some self reflection.

Do I like people's posts because they have liked mine?

Do I like posts because EVERY body else is liking the post?

Do I like posts because they are funny?

Do I like posts because I agree?

Uggghhh,

To"like" or NOT to "like" that is the question.

Thanks Klone!

Klone has me doing some self reflection.

See, hasn't this been a very cathartic exercise for everyone?

I like when I strongly agree, they make me laugh, and sometimes because they said basically what I planned on saying.

Absolutely have to go see what post got a like when I open AN and see the notification up top.
