Are there any camps that hire student nurses?

Published

I'm a first year ASN student, and I was wondering if there are any camps out there that hire student nurses. I live in NY, so camps in the NE region of the states would be ideal, but I could travel if it would mean experience.

Anyone know of any places?

Thanks!

yes, I do: the place I have worked at before -- the Global Youth Village. They hire a "health care manager" each summer, which is a position for someone who is not licensed yet, but w/ current 1st aid & CPR. This person handles most of the average, day-to-day needs, w/ an RN checking in each day as needed, or on call for the more complex stuff. You get a lot of hands on experience and learn a lot. It is in Virginia. Good luck finding a place. Camp nursing is great! .

I worked as Camp Health Officer for two summers while I was a student. You'll need to find out what the minimum requirements are for the camps you're considering--in my case I needed Red Cross CPR-PR and Responding to Emergencies.

from a clinical you are only a 'Student Nurse' when you are on placement .... as other posters have suggested there may be roles which being a student health professional give a good preparation for , but you won't be hired *as* a Student Nurse

I worked at a camp last summer as a student, and I got the job through nurses.campstaff.com. It's free to join and I got a bunch of calls after I registered. I just specifically mentioned that I was a student so there wasn't any confusion.

My camp was an all girls camp 8-16 years old in Wisconsin, with about 280 campers. We had 1 RN, 1 LPN and 2 students, including myself. We all worked pretty independently but the RN usually made the decision if we were unsure.

Good luck!

What camp was this?

So...camps I've found:

* Camp Baco and Che-Na-Wah (brother/sister camp in the Adirondacks) - I have already gotten a positive response from them, so they are a definite possibility.

* Camp Wicosuta

* Lake of the Woods Camp

* Camp Wayne Girls

What camp was this?

Camp Agawak.

I think I applied at camp Che-Na-Wah, too, but when they called me, I had already taken the job at Agawak.

Oh, cool.

I would much rather work at Che-Na-Wah because it's much closer to home (I'm from NY).

Looks like I might be joining the ranks of camp nurses!

I was called by Camp Baco, and spoke with one of the directors today...and she told me about the job etc. then said to send two references and call her in a couple of days so that we can maybe get it tied up soon.

The hours seem perfectly reasonable (there are 2 nurses, and you split the hours between the two of you), there's one full day off per week along with 2 or 3 nights off a week, if no kids are sick, you don't have to stay in the health office, you can use the facilities of the camp, and the pay is kind of awesome.

HOLY CRAP WOW!

They hired me!

The director offered me the job (contingent on satisfactory references) on Friday and asked if I was ready to accept. I said I would like a couple of days which she was fine with that. I called her yesterday to accept, and she said they were still waiting on references, but great, and that because they were still waiting on references, I probably wouldn't hear anything else for about a week or so, and that's when I would get my contract...but lo and behold, I received it in an email today!

I decided to take the position because it seems like an awesome opportunity, the camp looks and sounds fun, the pay is great, and, it'll give me over a month of summer vacation before heading off to work since I end school in early to mid May, and staff orientation starts June 21!

I'm super stoked!

What is the pay they offered you there? I am applying for camp jobs as well (in MA) and am curious what other places are ofering.
