Per the request of janina08 I've started the April NCLEX takers support group. When do you take it? What are you using to study? Would anyone like to review any of the systems/meds that he/she feels weakest on? Let's keep each other in our prayers and good thoughts as we go through one of the biggest experiences of our lives. :)
Hi you guys, I woke up with a sore throat, and I test on Monday.
I've never felt so anxious before in my life, I'd rather give a speech in front of millions. Maybe that caffeine that I'm drinking for that lack of sleep last night is to blame! Anyways I study better when I'm under pressure and drinking coffee. I'm still confused about how to handle priority questions. I know we use our ABCs, but I'm starting to think MASLOWS works better. I keep thinking about the question discussed a while back about the skinny homeless guy crossing the street with oncoming traffic and we're suppose to offer a sandwich. Now I'm getting the priroity questions mostly wrong.
I dont want to be the one to ruin the passing rate for April.
Send me good vibes!

Well it sounds like you've been studying quite a bit. You'll be fine. Just don't study on Sunday. Relax on sunday and go to bed early. As far as those priority questions that you've been getting wrong. Just keep doing them and really go over the rationales as to why the correct answer is the one it is. And remember on Sunday you should do this :tbsk: not this:wtosts:.
Best of luck to you. I know exactly how you feel.
I AM SOOO PROUD TO BE A PART OF THIS GROUP!!!!!!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS TO JANINA, KANO, LAURA, STEVE, GENNY, AND EVERYONE ELSE I HAVE NOT MENTIONED! (THERE ARE A LOT OF YOU NEW RN'S. FORGIVE ME FOR NOT REMEMBERING!!) I just want to say that I am ecstatically happy for each and every one of you. You conquered a horrid beast! Congrats for being able to do it. :yeah:
I dont want to be the one to ruin the passing rate for April.Send me good vibes!
You and me both! I'm sooo scared about this dumb exam. I hope you feel better, honey! About the priority questions, well, I always think about the worst scenario: will this person die if I don't attend to them first?
For example, if a person calls the nurse and leaves a msg saying that they've been vomiting for the past couple of days, then if there is no ABC answer, THAT'S your answer. When a person vomits for that many days, they're at risk for fluid and electrolyte imbalance. That is fatal if not corrected immediately.
Now, if you have a question where you see ALL of the ABCs, then always go with airway. There was a question in Kaplan where the home health nurse was visiting a pt and there was a huge earthquake that happened in that region. There were four injured patients. (I'm paraphrasing here. )
One was a woman who was bleeding.
The second was a man who looked like he had tracheal shift.
The third was a baby who was unconscious.
And the fourth was a person who had SOB (shortness of breath).
In the answers, you see all of the ABCs. However, the most critical pt at this time is the second pt. His airway is compromised. The first pt's circulation is compromised too, as is the fourth pt who is having SOB. However, none of them are priority when it comes to this particular question. (I'm sure you know that, but it helps ME to write it out too!)
Of course, there are times when you cannot use any of those strategies because neither ABCs nor Maslow's work. Sometimes, it's just straight up safety, but safety never comes before airway. I hope I made sense.
GOOD LUCK!!
by the way, i think it's update time!!!!!!

---> Good vibes
I feel the same. I feel more like I'm going to throw up anytime. it hink it's me sitting in the car for more than half an hour under the midday sun. It felt good at the time, now I feel malaised and like I want to throw up
W. that homeless guy question, I was confused also and then I forgot who it was explained it very well in nclex terms. There was a word MALNOURISHED, so for the nclec world, it would be offering sandwich.
W. priority questions: I think:
ABC would fall under MASLOW. First maslow it and then try ABC, if it is Physiological needs. I'm advising u left and right here like I know , when it comes to my turn, I am missing words when reading questions and sweating thru questions. I think it will depend on the situation also.
I remember this one question. I think it had to do with TPN. And appying ABC, 'course I want to offer o2 to my patient first, but a/c to rational, I had to clamp the tube first and then call the PHysician and then only offer the prescribed o2 to my patient. So, phew!
I need to avoid all negativity for next couple of days Please God, I don't want to fall sick or have negative thoughts for sometimes. i don't care if I fall sick after the exam, but not before that. Hope we feel better hun

Would you not cater to the baby first? Maybe not in this questino, but in general? thnks

I thought the same thing, but I looked at the rationale and it said to use the ABCs, because you have no reason to believe that the baby's airway is compromised. (I guess since it's NCLEX world and everything is perfect that that baby was probably sleeping or something?) But, the reason Kaplan said that the answer was tracheal shift was because that man's airway was compromised.
